Ever since Paul Konchesky was loaned out to Nottingham Forest at the start of Kenny Dalglish’s reign, it would be fair to say that the Reds have not had one established first choice at left back. The likes of Fabio Aurelio, Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly, John Flanagan and Jack Robinson have all filled in but none, for one reason or another, stayed in that position to become a settled presence in the side.

Fabio Aurelio’s perennial problems with injuries persisted, Glen Johnson was switched to fill in and accommodate Martin Kelly in the side, John Flanagan switched sides with Johnson during the latter stages of last season, and also young Jack Robinson ably deputised in matches versus Arsenal and Birmingham City.
