The most pleasing aspect of Liverpool’s season so far

|

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was asked how Stewart Downing responded to being dropped for last week’s game with Chelsea, in his pre-match press conference for Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City. He responded:

“Did you see Downing’s face when Glen Johnson scored? Print that picture rather than me using any words to describe how he felt. It says more than I could say. That is always the strength of the squad – those who aren’t playing. That is where you get your success from.”

He couldn’t be more correct. Just look at Liverpool’s first goal. The man who provided the assist, Craig Bellamy, was making just his second league start of the season, while the player who scored the goal, Maxi Rodriguez, was making his first.

Yet neither player has sulked or complained to the press this season. They have both just got on with their jobs. Maxi scored seven goals in the final five games of last season, and would have expected to have featured regularly during this campaign. That was not the case, but when he was asked to do a job, he came into the team and gave a fine performance.

Downing and Jordan Henderson, two big-money summer signings, would both have been disappointed not to have started such a big game at Stamford Bridge. But as Dalglish pointed out, it is easy to see the delight in their faces when they celebrated Johnson’s late winner.

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

downing should be dropped always for maxi.maxi has a soccer brain and is composed.downing goes for power where he should just place the ball.yesterday he could have scored those two chances he sent begging.the sooner keny realises that maxi is better than stew the better.

The loss of Gerrard and Carragher by injury has been the most positive thing this year. If they didn’t know it, they now know the other lads can do it without them now.

The defence and midfield working well together. Skyrtl and Agger coming good as i thought they would, and Lucas keeping the idiots quiet. The new lads starting to find their feet.
