Not a complete victim

LFC Uruguay strikerLUIS Suarez has been criticised by many during his time in England on a number of occasions. He’s been branded a racist and a cheat; for diving all the time in trying to con referees in to awarding fouls in his favour.

Why he decided to bite Branislav Ivanovic towards the end of last season is beyond any logical understanding, but it was done and he was punished for it.

It wasn’t just him that was punished though, as Liverpool had to face the task of going 10 matches without their star striker.

Now the latest reports which are being fuelled by many as a warning sign of him not being at Anfield are concerning – him telling a Uruguayan radio station that the English press’ treatment of him may force him out of the country.

To be completely objective, if that does end up being the case, then Suarez’s case for self-victimisation may be quite on the line. He’s far from complete innocence here and despite him claiming that the way he’s been treated by the media has made his wife and child suffer, he’s equally responsible for that to some extent.

If you reveal to the media that you have been going down easily to influence refereeing decisions, then you should expect to be judged negatively for that. That was after months of other managers and players alleging that as well, which he had been denying all the way to the extent of mocking David Moyes with a dive while celebrating a goal.

After that, if you say you had been trying to play the system after all and thereby justifying the claims people made against you, then don’t expect a pat on the back for it. Brendan Rodgers was rightly annoyed with him for that, and so were the supporters.

At Liverpool, divers and cheats have usually been viewed with disgust and rightly so. From the Cristiano Ronaldos to the Didier Drogbas, and now to El Pistolero, it doesn’t matter how great a player you are if the rest of your mindset remains cheap.

The racism tag was based on an ambiguous event, which depending on which side of the argument you’re at will likely reflect your final judgement of it.

Both sides of the argument can be understood and it’s something that could’ve been resolved with an apology and a clarification.

In Britain however reactions to everything, no matter how accidental or unintended they were, are always more in line with the worst degree possible within the genre of the offence.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
We’ve seen that with Suarez’s 8 game ban then, and John Terry’s case which was ruled on by a criminal court as not a clear case of racism, only for the FA to still ban him for the very offence he was cleared of by the law – racism.

The FA were happy to accept a lesser degree of proof, even if it meant taking a stray word completely out of context.

If you leave it down to common sense, both matters could’ve been easily judged without resorting to all sorts of definitions. Everyone knows deep down what discrimination is and it only takes a deep breath and common sense to ascertain whether something said being or done was for unfair reasons or more a co-incidence.

That’s an argument for another day.

Coming back to Suarez however, his biting incident then of Branislav Ivanovic was immature and any criticism aimed at him for that was less than what he deserved for that.

No one can argue that it’s acceptable to go gnawing at people as an adult anywhere in the world, so it’s quite clear he was behaving extremely irrationally and recklessly – without considering the wider consequences for him and the team.

If reactions to these incidents have all been unfair on Suarez, then so has some of his behaviour.

Instead of playing the victim, it’ll be better for him to wake up from this strange oblivion to reality he’s displayed at times, and just get his head down and return to people’s good books.

He has already proved he is beyond just an amazing player, someone who can easily take the world by storm. At Liverpool he had the supporters right behind him and there are very few places in the world where he will get that kind of unconditional love.

If he decides to move away because he can’t handle certain reactions to his own doings, which in most of the cases were wrong on his part to begin with, then it’ll be a sad loss for both Liverpool and him.

It could be argued that the comparison of losses may see him come out with the heavier deficit because the club has had great forwards in the past and will have another one again.

No one is and should ever be bigger than the club. For every player leaving the team however, that individual misses the chance of being counted amongst certain greats such as Kenny Dalglish, or Ian Rush, even the modern day greats of recent years such as Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, perhaps even Fernando Torres.

Liverpool have shown their commitment towards keeping Suarez so he can be counted among them someday. It’s his responsibility to conduct himself in a way worthy of not just a place at the club, but society in general.

Can we please stop talkin about suarez. It’s gone on too long

Brendan said he won’t be sold this summer ! — And we all know brendan doesn’t bull*hit , don’t we ?

  • Erin says:

Why are people afraid of change? Juventus proved it to everyone. Sold Zidane , replaced him with Buffon, trezegue and Nedved, the result, won the league. No, not innocent by any account. Misunderstood ? Perhaps, but his own doing. Blind rage caused the bite, desire to win by getting a Winding up a Man U player, got the other ban. I like him, but our club is bigger. If he wants to stay, welcome, if he doesn’t, set a deadline, sell him, plus Carrol and buy 3 player to contribute 23 goals. 65 million should see to that, unless Ashley Williams is now worth 30 million…

    • jack says:

Nice idea ….but there is just one problem with that – it’s Brenda who would be spending the dosh…ie.we would be doomed

      • Vince says:

Are you kidding me!? Brendan made 2 purchases last Janruary. Sturrige and Coutinho!! The two have had immediate impact, been consistent and bargins! As well as becoming key figures in only a few months. He’s also made the most of the duffers Kenny squandered millions on. If you think Brendan is a bad buyer you’re dumb. If you’re not behind our manager, our wonderful club doesn’t need you.

        • jack says:

If you think Brenda is anything other than a hopeless championship standard manager then you are insane. Our wonderful club doesn’t need unintelligent fools like you

Allen Borini Assaidi Sahin and Yesil all a complete waste of money signed by Brenda !!!

          • Mmadubuike Cj Emmanuel Kizito says:

Who said Yesil is a waste of money, God..he is just a kid.. A wonder kid.

          • Joshp lfc says:

Jack, shut ur beak lad. U dont no wot ur on about.

Allen was our best player up till Christmas when his shoulder injury started to get worse.

Yesil is unreal, he is still a boy. Give him a chance. U probs don’t watch the youth enough to no anything about him. He’s record for Germany is unreal. The best they have ever had.

Sahin, mistakes r made. Everyone wanted him. He was * and we got rid ASAP.

Assaidi has played well wen coming on but Rogers must not like hims. He was cheap and he will probs go.

Borini has been injured so I can’t say much on that one yet. Time will tell.

The fact u think Rogers buys * is just thick.

Anyway, we r moving in the right direction and we seen that in the 2nd half of the season. I like Rogers and I hope he is given atleast 2 more years.

            YNWA

          • jack says:

Josh u haven’t a clue. I watch all youth games . How many have u seen ? None obviously.yesil has been rubbish
As for comments on Allen , that shows u don’t even watch the first team matches
You need to start watching the games , u might know more then

        • Brigadier says:

Yeah right, forgetting we finished 7th! But oh we signed a couple of players, woopee!

          • CHINALFC says:

How come blame is on Rogers?
Should not be on Kenny? As he put back to 8th. His players under perform, was Allen blame for all errors? As he only Rogers player to feature at start.

          • Saus monster says:

What exactly did you expect after finishing 8 th the prior season?

          • Paul fitz says:

After 55m spent and a season injury free to all best players , then yeah ! We should do a hell of a lot better. We are Liverpool not Swansea you know. sheesh

  • Ray Maxie says:

Remember players come and go Liverpool will remain always

  • Vince says:

He also got the best out of our youth team. At least his ideas for player types and systems don’t outdate the Sony cassette Walkman. He knows what football he wants and knows clear as day who he needs. He will build a team of winners. I’m sure of it!!

    • Jon says:

I’m with you mate, the players we have been heavly linked with can only improve the team.BR knows what he’s doing

      • jack says:

If Rodgers knew what he is doing – why did we have our worst season in decades. And why did he waste our transfer budget on rubbish last season while leaving us with only 2 strikers

You haven’t a clue , just like our manager

        • Jon says:

How did we have our worst season in decades?
We finished higher in the league with a huge goal improvement , ok the position we finished wasn’t what lfc would expect but we improved on last season. Winning a domestic cup isn’t going to make us top four contenders next season, we have made massive changes at the club and we are far more stable financially. I believe we will become a top four club sooner rather than later.
We all want to see the club back to its former glory if its BR or Rafa or whoever. We need to keep behind the club

          • jack says:

Duh. 7 th place with 3 embarrasing cup exits. Season over by march the 1st . That was the worst season since b4 shanks. Look up Liverpool history b4 asking silly question like that

    • Brigadier says:

Yawn. Winners like Allen, Borini, Assaidi…

  • always red says:

When did a kangaroo court become legal in England?

  • scouse ed says:

Does anyone really believe the “I want to leave cos the press are mean to me ” bullshat ?

Come on, dont be so naive. He said 3 weeks ago in a interview that it was water off a ducks back

Suarez is leaving cos he wants (and deserves) to be playing in a tteam in champ league and a team capable of winning stuff. He obviously doesn’t believe that is possible at Liverpool right now

The only thing I blame him for is using this nonsense excuse instead of telling truth

  • Jas says:

Kenny,Barnes, mcmanaman, fowler,Owen,Torres have all gone at some stage and inevitably there’s a sense of dread as what’s to come because we’v lost world class footballers but that’s what footballs all about,we’l survive as we’v always done. No mans bigger than the club so if Suarez wants to go let him.but we name the price, not Madrid.
As for BR,sure the guy makes mistakes but he’s bringing us in the right direction.his critics need to realise footballs changed from the 70s and 80s,liverpools changed.theres no quick fix unless some sheikh or Russian billionaire takes over.so lets support BR and appreciate what he’s trying to do on a limited budget.

    • Keith says:

Over 55 million NET was the 3rd highest budget in premier last season . All fans realize there is no quick fix , but most also realize that Rodgers could have all the time in the world , and it won’t matter . The guy is not a good manager so no amount of patience will help. The sooner he is gone IMO the better for LFC

      • Joshp lfc says:

        ^^^^

        Japs eye that lad !!

      • benji says:

Hear hear Keith , cant wait til he goes

      • Saus monster says:

Johnson says Rogers is a good manager and he educates the players and they respect his management, but obviously you know best sat at your pc.

This is the season to judge Rogers not last season as he inherited a team of overpayed under achievers. He has cleared them out mostly and is building his own team. I would much rather have coutinhio, allen, sturridge and borini than carrol, cole, adam and spearing in my team. You?

        • Brigadier says:

Glen Johnson, a man who once stole a toilet seat! Ahahaha ha!

        • keith says:

No. I’ll take coutinho. And maybe sturridge. The rest are rubbish. The fact that he is building his own team is not a good thing for us. The man is out of his depth and drowning

          • Saus monster says:

Why is the reality of the situation so hard for you to grasp?
So you’ll have coutinho and maybe sturridge? And keep spearring and carroll?
We can all say who we would sign but WE don’t and will never sign any players.
If your gonna blame Rodgers then you must blame Kenny also as Rodgers was left with his sh!t buys

        • bob says:

all players talk nice about their boss . you would be stupid not to

im just amazed that anyone believes or listens to that bull

    • Brigadier says:

      LOL, Limited budget?

  • Igwegboo joseph gerrard says:

Rodger tanx by sign asapa, but i stil need one good defender, coz kolo tour is nt good defender..I wil tanx my loving COUTINHO..YNWA

  • red says:

This writer is talking like Alex Ferguson. No problem if we sell Suarez provided we receive a huge fee like 50m torres.

We need to spend that money on 2 better strikers. Borini is reserve team striker and Sturridge is not reliable/scoring enough for any team challenging for the title. Don’t talking about top 4 finishing and giving all sort of excuses. You are either the champion or nothing.

  • koy says:

Wow! After reading few of the comments I wonder why some of these idiots bother supporting any club at all??!! BR no doubt is a young manager. And he is learning and learning fast. How many managerial changes do you want in a season or 2? What we have to realise is that we are on a stable footing now. All managers make mistakes and they learn from it. Even whiskey nose Alex. Look where they are after the initial sufferings or even Everton as a matter of fact. All signings are a gamble, what happened before doesn’t necessarily works for you and vice versa. Look at coutinho for example, you can’t get enough of him now, can you? He was rotting in Inter’s bench. Then again there will always be whiners who think money n constant change solves all problems and the way forward. All in all stop whining and complaining and channel that energy to supporting our team, because oneday even we’ll have our own Lfc story to tell and know that WE supported, we felt all the emotions we could humanely feel and see the Phoenix rise. YNWA.

    • tommo says:

What a load of bull. Rodgers is taking us nowhere and the sooner the naive fans like you realise that , then the quicker ee can actually do something about it and then push on. Stop living in a dreamland

      • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

WELL SAID TOMMO, brenda rodgers is learning and learning f***. at whose expense?

    • Jon says:

Well said koy, but on this site theres 1 or 2 people that will claim you know nothing or claim your naive or a kid. It will seem like more than 1 or 2 but its just multiple accounts from someone with too much time on their hands and a stale view of BR regardless of results etc.

I thought you made some good points.

Its good to know theres still some logical fans out there.

      • David Tobin says:

What a immature comment again. So everyone who disagrees with you is the same person ?
You are amazingly stupid to think everyone follows your opinions

Get a grip of yourself. Every time you comment you show yourself to be a naive kid

      • kav says:

You complete plank Jon. Your childish comments are amusing though .

    • Brigadier says:

Koy, stop dreaming, we are a 7th place ordinary team, you morons are just clutching at straws and making excuses. You should go into politics!! Ha ha!
