Toby AlderweireldLIVERPOOL’S summer transfer window target, Toby Alderweireld, has claimed that he actually shunned an approach from the Reds before making the move to his new club, Atletico Madrid, on Monday.

The Belgian centre-back had been linked with numerous big names through the latter stages of the transfer window, but eventually opted against a move to the Premiership and instead substituted the Eredivisie for La Liga and joined Atletico Madrid in a last minute, four year deal.

However, despite this, Liverpool will not be overly dismayed about their failure to procure the 24 year old, as Brendan Rodgers managed to bolster his defensive options with the signings of Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon and Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, meaning both Liverpool and Alderweireld are content with their seperate decisions.

Speaking of why he spurned Liverpool’s advances for Atletico Madrid, Alderweireld said:

“The club have been following me now for two or three weeks, and you could see they really wanted me.

“That is why I turned down approaches from other teams. Liverpool, for example, appeared in the last few days, but I had already made my decision.

“The truth is that Atletico made a huge effort to convince me.”

Despite not bringing Alderweireld to Anfield, Brendan Rodgers secured an impressive nine signings this summer.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

I was obvious with both him and the lad at Ajax that went to Spurs. If they had been seen as targets for the first team they would have been added

Sakho was seen as the first team choice CB and that left him and Liori as young back up to both CB both available for around the same fee

Liori was chosen ahead of this lad and I don’t think Liverpool will regret either choice

The decision regarding the lad at Ajax who went to spurs was taken very early on when he whored himself all over Europe not a good sign for a player under contract no matter how much potential they might have

In your dreams Alderweirld, if Liverpool had wanted you’d be here!

I’d take Sakho ahead of him anyday!! And I’m being nice by comparing him to Sakho rather than our youngster Ilori!!

having so much to say suggests the real reason was he was scared of the competition and also the quality and pace of the premier league.

Keep telling that to console your sorryself Toby,, .. LFC, BR never mentioned your name or Eriksen’s name even once. It was the media that did that. Like James Russel said, you’d already be here if LFC wanted you. It just that, you are not man enough to play for LFC..bhoy!
