With Adam Lallana’s signing seemingly imminent and the likes of Bender, Sanchez and Markovic all being linked with Liverpool in recent days, it would seem that Brendan Rodgers and his transfer committee are looking to ramp up recruitment over the coming week.
Speaking today, Rodgers said, “We’ve targeted players, we’ve signed some and we’ll have more signings to come over the course of the pre-season. The idea is by the end of August we’ll have the squad together and it will be a really exciting time for us next season.
“We’ve a lot of young players who will have gained experience last season and we will bring in more players with added quality so we will also improve as well and that’s something I’m really looking forward to seeing.”
The signing of Rickie Lambert kicked off Liverpool’s summer window, with German youngster Can signing days later but the Lallana transfer has dragged on but finally looks to be coming to an end and Rodgers wants to make sure that the majority of the Reds’ business is wrapped up before pre-season training really gets under way.
“Obviously returning to the Champions League is fantastic for the club and for the supporters, but we’re into four competitions next season and we want to do really well, and that’s going to take a few more signings to bring in”, said the Liverpool manager.
With Lallana likely to be a Liverpool player within the next 24 hours, who would you like to see follow him to Anfield?
Are we signing too many? It didn’t work for spurs last season. Does playing 6 champions league games (possibly more) necessitate signing maybe half a dozen new players? I’m not sure. And what about ffp?
Spurs pretty much tried to buy a new starting XI. They just went after players other teams had targeted with no plan of how to play them together. The Complete opposite of what Rodgers is doing.
Of the 3 players Liverpool have signed, only Lallana is likely to be starting (or rotating with Coutinho), with Can and Lambert offering much needed strength from the bench.
Our squad was too thin to challenge properly in the league towards the end of last season, let alone even attempt a run in either of the domestic cups. Plus obviously we’ll be hoping to make it out of the CL group stages.
Rodgers stated that we’re looking to bring in 6 players in this window. That would most likely be CF (Lambert), AM (Lallana) WG, DCM (Can), LB & CB. I would even say we could add another CM (box to box) and a No. 2 GK. Are there any of those positions you seriously think we don’t need to strengthen?!
Players that didn’t have genuine competition/cover for their starting spot: Gerrard, Enrique, Henderson, Suarez, Sturridge, Mignolet, Sterling. Plus if Agger and/or Toure goes, that another CB needed. 8 in total.
Players that need replacing: Moses, Cissokho, Jones, Agger/Toure, Aspas, Alberto*, Lucas. 7 in total, but we clearly lacked backup attacking options, so at least 1 more versatile attacker could hardly be seen as excessive!
As for FFP. The extra money for coming 2nd and the CL money, on top of our usual kitty has had most estimate the budget at £60m plus money from sales.
Potential players for sale: Reina £5m, Agger £12m, Coates £4m, Lucas £6, Suso £6m, Assaidi £5m, Aspas £5m, Borini £8m – that’s an estimated £50m+ on top of the kitty.
