There are a number of sources reporting that Brendan Rodgers is about to make Valdes his final signing of the summer

As reported last week, and again on deadline day, Liverpool look all be guaranteed to sign former Barca goalkeeper, Victor Valdes. The Spaniard, currently a free agent, has been without a club since he left the La Liga giants at the start of the summer and reports in Spain claim that Liverpool have agreed a one year deal to sign the 32 year old.

Of course, given his current fitness condition, the offer is subject to him proving his fitness and Valdes will supposedly have to prove the the club that his injuries are behind him and that he has what it takes to again challenge at the top level. Initial reports claimed that the club would wait until next month to sign the player (who, as a free transfer can sign outside the transfer window) but the Express report that the move could happen sooner than first believed.

A Spanish veteran of over 530 games for Barcelona and 20 caps for Spain, Valdes has often gone without the recognition he perhaps deserved, given his standing behind both Casillas and Reina (and, more recently, De Gea) for Spain. Not only that, but playing in a Barcelona side that rarely conceded many goals and often went weeks without an opposition side having any meaningful attempt on their goal meant that Valdes was often considered little more than a bog-standard goalkeeper, because the best side in Europe didn’t really need anything else, did they?

However, over the past few years Valdes’ stock has risen greatly as his value to Barca and standing in the game has come to be more appreciated and despite what many may wish to believe, the decision to leave Barcelona was Valdes’ own decision, rather than having been pushed out to accommodate the clubs’ new signings.

If Liverpool should complete the deal and bring in the Spaniard then it would add some serious depth and quality to the position, and could provide Mignolet with the encouragement he needs to finally step up and become one of the best goalkeepers around.

If, as we’re led to believe, Liverpool do complete this signing do you believe Valdes could compete with Mignolet for the number 1 shirt?

Sergio Romero is a better all round keeper.

Valdes should definitely compete for the number “1 shirt”. I think Mignolet needs the competition and this may help his improvement. If not, then we would have ourselves a bloody good goalie in Valdes.
