Rafa Benitez’s popularity amongst Liverpool fans has still not diminished

After scurrilous rumours over the weekend in the gossip pages that FSG were discussing the current Liverpool manager’s future, it was almost inevitable that one of the first names to crop up would be former Liverpool manager and still hugely favoured figure amongst Reds, Rafa Benitez.

Some bookies have even gone as far as to make him 6-1 favourite to take over from Rodgers, should he lose the support of John Henry, et al and the Napoli manager hasn’t done anything to quash the rumours himself today, as he was quoted as saying “My wife and two daughters live in Liverpool. It’s the first time I haven’t had them with me, it’s not easy. [Napoli owner Aurelio] De Laurentiis knows how important my family values are to me.”

The Spaniard was a huge fan favourite at Liverpool and many believe he was wrongly removed as manager, after having stood up to the former club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, whilst many at the club were prepared to stand by and let them attempt to ruin it.

Rafa also said, “When we finished second I was really pleased because we had 86 points and it still was not enough and everyone went ‘oh you lost an opportunity.

“So if you continue moaning about ‘oh we lost an opportunity’ you will not be ready for the future.

“So I think you have to concentrate on what you did well, what you did badly and then try to improve for the future, for the next one.”

On the face of it, the quotes are just that: quotes, Benitez has a job in Naples and, whether he returns to be with his family in the summer or not, there is all likelihood that Brendan Rodgers will still the Reds manager, as the side can only improve after the current international break.

And, obviously, we’re not attempting to add any sort of credence to the claims or weight to the ‘hints’ the former Liverpool manager has dropped, it is simply reporting on the man’s own words that he misses his family who are still living in the city but the problem for Brendan Rodgers is that, given the popularity Rafa still holds amongst Liverpool fans, simply answering questions about the club has those in the pro-Rafa camp pining for his return.

There are a number of pros and cons to Benitez returning but those are for another day as, at present, Brendan Rodgers is the current Liverpool manager and, no matter how much many of us may still love Rafa and long for his return, it’s only right to get fully behind the current regime.

There can be no doubt that Brendan has to oversee a great improvement on the side’s form so far this season and if things don’t begin to pick up, the spectre of Rafa will begin to loom even larger over the Liverpool manager but until that time nobody should read too much into the rumours and speculation.

As many have asked today: would you take Rafa back, and if so, when?

i think Rodgerz sh’d styleup 4 da coming match on saturday. If the lpool manager couldn’t persist his position then his living of the club is something gud 4 the club. Coz we as an africa we are not happy abt hw lpool is performing this season.

I would welcome Rafa back tomorrow. It’s tragic watching novice Rodgers being outwitted week in week out. He’s no tactical genius, except in ditching his wife.

in rafa benitez i trust with lfc

As much as I’d like Rogers removed ASAP, we still have to give him till the end if the season for a 2 reasons.
1-to prove that we allowed him enough time to improve the team and performances. After all, he assembled the team in the summer, spent 120 million and let him try and fix it. Unless things go from Bad (and they are) to worse.
2- fan unity. We were divided when Rafa left. Camp hodgeson on one side, those who thought it was wrong to remove him. By giving Rogers enough time, removes doubt as and proves it was a Suarez season, despite not because of Rogers.

So, unless Rogers shows incapable of producing results stick till the end if the season.
Modest objectives are now, beat ludogorez and Basel in the CL and start getting results . Show we are in for a top 4 place in January and group stages!

    Agree?

I want the best for LFC. The fact is Rafa Benitez is the best manager LFC have had since Paisley. Rafa is world class. He loves the club and the majority of the supporters love him. Rodgers is a clueless fraud, without Suarez he would have been found out last season. It would be crazy to let Rodgers waste any more cash on bad players. Rafa back now please FSG.

You have got to be joking. Fagan won more trophies in one year than benitez did in SIX years. Kenny won 6 trophies in a combined 7 years and so-called legend Rafa won just 2 trophies in SIX years. Rafa back? No thanks.

I’ll love to have rafa back this very minute, YNWA

  • Diego Digger Souness says:

Bloodee hell some people have short memories it was Benitez who started our decline finishing 7th in his last season and blowing a fortune on krap like Johnson, Aqualani & Robbie Keane. Then he blames everyone else for his mistakes. He had his chance. Move on.

    • Kay says:

Sourness QUIT!! You are the only Rafa hater

    • Erin says:

I have a good memory. I remember reading every day about a club who kept selling best players and still wanted CL football.
Most importantly, I remember Purslow trying to negotiate the sale for 2 years. Destabilising the club from top to bottom. I remember promises X Y Z amount to be spent. Only to be told there’s nothing to spend months later.
I remember , my club heading for administration. RBS hours away from taking over! Yet fans like you blaming the manager. What did you expect? The worse run club in England -bar none, and we were , in the top 4?

I also remember ungrateful fans like yourself hounding a great manager out if the club to replace him with one Roy.

And to those who question his time at Napoli. Third in the league this year. Won their first trophy in 26 years for them. Oh, and lost his best player in the summer, Cavani!
Need more evidence to prove his ability?
