As the aftermath and, to some, the inquest from Tuesday’s Champions League exit continues today Steven Gerrard insisted that the Basel result wasn’t the result that put the side out, it was the form across all six group stage games that resulted in Liverpool’s exit last night.
In a post-match interview, the Liverpool captain said “We haven’t gone out of the competition because of our performance tonight.
“We’ve gone out because away at Basel we weren’t good enough and in our last game we conceded a stupid goal towards injury time.
“You always qualify over the six games and unfortunately we have not been good enough.”
Gerrard managed to pull a goal back for the Reds and, to many, it looked as if the legendary comebacks of the past were about to be relived but it wasn’t to be and Liverpool will now await the draw for the Europa League after Thursday’s round of games which includes the club’s city rivals Everton.
The Liverpool captain continued “But at the moment it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. It’s tough but take nothing away from the lads that are here slogging away every week. Rickie Lambert has ran himself into the ground in the last five games.
“Unfortunately this game has come as too many in such a short space of time because we are short of numbers. But of course this club always tries to strengthen, tries to improve. We dust ourselves down and go again.”
Can Liverpool make a real go of the Europa League, or should the target be qualifying for next year’s competition through the league now? Let us know in the comments.
