Rodgers looks away in despair as Liverpool crash out of the Champions League

Liverpool, somewhat predictably, crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage last night in ignominious fashion to Swiss champions FC Basel, leaving the club with just Europa League football to console them.

After a long, hard season last year the club today find themselves tending to the wounds of a failed ECL campaign that laid waste to the ground work set down by the club last year and Brendan Rodgers and his players now find themselves in the position of having to work out where they go from here.

Speaking after the match last night, Brendan said ” We’re obviously disappointed but we can’t have any excuses about not qualifying – we had enough games.

“The big game for us was away in Basel, where we were disappointing, didn’t perform well, conceded a poor goal and lost out there. We can have no complaints. If you deserve to go through and get the points, then you go through.

“They’re a good side and they are experienced at this level. They’re the top side in Swiss football and they regularly qualify for the Champions League. So they have got experience behind them. Over the course of the games, they’ve deserved to go through.

“We haven’t been good enough over the course of the qualification to get through. We have got to take that on the chin now and move into the next competition, and we’ll hope to do better in that.”

While most would agree that Basel did deserve to go through, the comments from Rodgers that experience was key for the Swiss champions and that Liverpool didn’t perform well enough are unlikely to go down well, given the money spent last summer and the amount of time the club had to prepare for the competition.

Rodgers continued “It has been a really good learning experience for us and we’ll fight as hard as we possibly can to ensure it’s not another five years. We’ve come a long way in a short period of time.

“But we go out tonight and are bitterly disappointed. There’s been a lot of learning over the course of the games and we’ll look to fight very hard to be back in it again next year.”

With Manchester United to come on Sunday, there will be no let up for the Reds as Xmas approaches and Brendan and his team have it all to do to ensure the recent run isn’t stopped prematurely and the wheels don’t completely come off the club’s season.

Can Rodgers stop the rot and turn the team’s fortunes around? Let us know in the comments.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Rogers has got a clue about how to turn the teams fortunes around. Also, I think the rot is down to him.

he just lack the technical know how to manage at the top level; last season suarez made him look great; but he has been exposed time without number this season; i wonder why its taking FSG so long to get a replacement; he cant seem to get u performing consistently.. Playing 3 conservative midfielder and gerrard @ anfield while needing a win.. Having the useless markovic on the bench at the espense of borini to replace lambert who has played for straight games @ 32, leaving lallana and coutinho and can on the bench? Why did you sign them. Plss FSG sack him because he is costing us

No mate. He can’t stop it. He was always a developing manager, never the finished article. Suarez last season stroked his already inflated ego to beyond measure. Made him delusional, and the press didn’t help either…you didn’t either David. When rational fans kept screaming last season “work on the defence” we were told to shut up….as long as you score more etc. But we knew his game management was almost amateur like. See Cardiff , stoke, Swansea results for prof. 2-3 goals up but couldn’t hold on. Mistakes-gaps in defence, wrong set up defending free kicks, goalkeeper calamity . They were valid criticism. Masked by Louis.

Read his comments. The game against Basel? Yes, how about the one against real? Why can’t we get a draw at home?

Rogers is already sacked mate. Mind is made up by the owners . Make no mistake, there will be targets. Realistic ones after spending 120 million. Such as progress from the group, and reach top 4.

Do you honestly think we are top 4 material? The scum sacked Moyes and spend a fortune. Pains me to say if but 3 places are gone up there. City, Chelsea and Man U. Leaves us fighting with wenger for what’s left and the other teams above us.

Timing is everything. The owners need to look at whether we do have a chance with another man in charge.

As for Rogers. This is the highest level he will ever get. From here, the only way is the championship
