Sturridge’s return to first team action can’t happen soon enough

If there was ever a double-header of games that displayed Liverpool’s dire need of a top striker it was the Chelsea and Bolton cup games in the past week. Over the two games, the team had 42 shots, with 15 on target but managed just 1 goal. There is no doubting that had there been a man up front with that clinical instinct it would’ve been different.

So, it is with great pleasure for us all, that Brendan Rodgers announced on Saturday night that Daniel Sturridge returns to full training for with squad today. He said “He starts training tomorrow with the team. He’s in his final rehabilitation with the medical and sports science guys today.

“He joins in with the group now and it’s just about getting football fitness and game fitness. We’ll see how he is for Tuesday.

“If he’s not ready for Tuesday then he’ll be back, for sure, against West Ham next weekend.”

The possibility that he could make an appearance against Chelsea is a massive boost, considering the lack of a natural finisher has seen Liverpool struggle to make the break-through against two well-organized opponents.

Nobody wants to see Sturridge rushed back and re-injured though, but if he can come off the bench for 20 minutes and score the winner against Chelsea then it’ll be a very welcome, belated Christmas present for us all.

Would you like to see Dan have some part to play on Tuesday, or is it more important that he is managed back to full fitness, no rushed? Let us know in the comments.
