Liverpool take on Chelsea on Tuesday night looking to make the league cup final

With LFC due to engage in the clubs’ third cup game in a week tomorrow evening, the visit to Chelsea becomes the biggest game the Reds have taken part in since the defeat at home to the same team which all but called time on Liverpool’s hopes of ending the club’s wait for a league title last season.

Ahead of the clash, Brendan Rodgers said in his press conference today “It’s a different game, of course, but a game we’ll have to be really solid in our defending in.

“That was also key; we were a real threat going forward, but if you analyse the last game we were very good defensively. We had great pressure on the ball, we were very good controlling the counter-attack.”

The Reds will have the likes of Skrtel and Lucas returning for the game and there is a huge amount of optimism surrounding the team’s hopes of progression, particularly after the capitulation against lower league opposition that saw Chelsea lose from a winning position in the FA Cup on Saturday.

He continued “But we’ve got great confidence going into the game, knowing that in particular away from home our form and resilience is getting better and better, and we can get a result.

“The opportunity to win trophies was always going to be a priority for us. We’re at the semi-final stage, it’s a one-off game now to take us there. We feel confident that we can get a result that gets us into the final.”
