While he may have been on the verge of a move to Turkey during the transfer window over the summer months, Lucas Leiva has said today that he hadn’t wanted to leave the club, and city, that has been his home for eight years.
Speaking to the Mirror, Lucas said: “I was very frustrated that I couldn’t make the squad for the first two games, but I had to keep training and working hard because we have a lot of examples where football can change in a moment.
“A couple of things happened during the first couple of games that gave me the chance to play against Arsenal, and I believe it was because I was training so hard and was well prepared that I was able to come in and have a good game.”
Lucas has faced this situation before in his time at the club, so would have been familiar with how to respond and when those circumstances allowed the midfielder to play against Arsenal he took it with both hands. Something which is believed to be why his move to Turkey didn’t go through.
He continued: “Maybe if there hadn’t been the Arsenal game, I wouldn’t be here now. But I always believe that things happen for a reason.
“I’m very happy that I stayed and I will keep fighting for the club as I have been doing for the past eight years.”
The midfielder played his 200th Premier League game for Liverpool on Sunday and is likely to pass 300 games if he is still around by the end of the season, making him one the club’s current longest serving player, as well as one of our most experienced.
