It simply wasn’t to be in the end for Liverpool and City took the trophy home

It just wasn’t to be by the end, as Liverpool’s players stood in the centre circle on the Wembley pitch, looking straight ahead as the Man City players raced off to celebrate.

The small touch of class from Kompany will have been scant consolation to a group of players that, once again, bossed the majority of a game against – supposedly – the best team in the country but just couldn’t find that magic again.

The return of Daniel Sturridge was supposed to signal an upturn in front of the opposing goal but, on the day, the striker was actually quite poor and very much struggled to make his mark.

That said, many of his team-mates hit dud notes throughout in front of goal, with a mixture of displays across the field. If we’re to take any real positives from the game it’s that Manchester City needed the luck of a lottery to win the first silverware of the season.

Onwards and upwards then, with the Europa League now firmly in Jurgen Klopp’s sights. Check out the player ratings trough the link below.
