Liverpool have been linked with a move for Marseille’s Nicolas Nkoulou as a main defensive target this summer, according to Italian journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.

Writing for Tribal Football, Giulianelli believes that the 26 year old will be a priority signing after they sell Martin Skrtel this summer. The centre half is an experienced player after being a first team regular for the Ligue One side for the last five seasons. Before that, he was a regular for Monaco at the back, as straight from his senior debut against Lorient in September 2008, he became first choice, playing for 3 seasons at the Stade Louis II stadium.

Nkoulou is a Cameroonian international with 68 caps to his name and made 42 appearances in all competitions this season. With the imminent departure of Skrtel, and with Kolo Toure released on a free transfer, the Reds will have only three senior centre backs in Joel Matip, Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren. With uncertainty about how long Sakho’s doping ban will be, Nkoulou may well be seen as a solid understudy who can make up the numbers in the squad.
