Roma are interested in the possibility of signing Thomas Vermaelen, according to the La Gazzetta Dello Sport. Spanish newspaper Sport last month confirmed that Liverpool were interested in bidding for the 30 year old.
Vermaelen has however been beset with injuries both at Arsenal and at current club Barcelona although he was fit for the majority of last season. He made just 10 league starts last campaign though and it is expected the Belgian international will leave the Camp Nou this summer.
He has performed quite well for Belgium at the European Championships and La Gazzetta believe that Serie A side Roma are now leading the chase for his signature. They want the centre back initially on loan but Barcelona will almost certainly demand that the option to buy the player at the end of the season is mandatory so that Roma don’t send the player back if he again suffers from a long term injury. In Liverpool’s case, much will depend on the size of Mamadou Sakho’s drugs ban for whether they move for another centre half.
