Mateo Kovacic is surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, according to Marca. The Spanish newspaper believe that the La Liga side are close to sealing the high profile transfer of Portuguese international Andre Gomes from Valencia, but manager Zinedine Zidane will then look to sell Kovacic as he does not have space for the Croatian in his squad.

The 22 year old was only bought for £22.5million from Inter Milan last summer but Real are already willing to listen to offers for the midfielder. The player would like to stay and prove himself at the Bernabeu and has performed well in training to adapt to Zidane’s methods. It is unlikely however he will be given more game time next season though with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Gomes all set to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Marca have once again linked Liverpool with a move for Kovacic but it seems interest from AC Milan has cooled. It is believed the delay in the Chinese consortium’s takeover of the Italian club is making any transfers very difficult leaving the Reds a clear run if they want the midfielder.
