Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he is determined to become number one goalkeeper with the Reds once again after manager Jurgen Klopp opted to choose Loris Karius as his first choice.

The Belgian international performed competently against Tottenham in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, making a good save from Spurs striker Vincent Janssen, but the 28 year old says he won’t be satisfied until he is playing regularly in the league once again. He is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying:

“I was happy to play – that’s what you want to do week in week out. I don’t want to be a number two, that’s clear. I want to play. I will keep fighting to get my place back. I will never give up fighting firstly because that’s not in my character to just give up. Secondly because I am not in a situation where I can sit on the bench. I’m 28 years old and I want to play week in week out.”

It is not likely however that Mignolet will recover his starting place any time soon. He performed well at the start of the season but still had to make way for Karius when the German returned from injury. It is pretty evident that Klopp brought in the keeper from Mainz to be Liverpool’s first choice and he will have to make a number of high profile errors if Mignolet wants to get back in the starting eleven.
