The Manuel Manual – How Pellegrini could build on the Rafalution

|

There are plenty of strong rumours floating around at the moment that Liverpool FC have been sold to the Abu Dhabi Group in a £600m deal and that Pellegrini has been named manager on the basis of that deal being finalised. However, if it is true, what could it mean for us?

If Liverpool FC have been sold, then it seems likely that Manuel Pellegrini could become manager. He has been offered a Premiership deal, according to his agent, and with Liverpool being the only vacant seat it’s not hard to put two and two together. If Pellegrini was to take the job then he would be walking into a job not as tough as people might think.

At Liverpool we have an exciting, vibrant academy that has been established by Rafael Benitez and now run by Rodolfo Borrell and Jose Segura. I feel that having a manager in place with strong Spanish links and of course of Spanish tongue, that a lot of the good work done under Benitez will not be undone. The hiring of Pellegrini would, in hope, prevent an exodus of players, particularly the Spanish contingent.

His arrival should signal the intent of the board, who are hopefully outgoing, to at least show some progressive ideals. Pellegrini is renowned for his attacking, technical football and we would all hope that he would bring that to Merseyside.

We have a superb starting XI at Liverpool and we can compete with any team in the world on a match by match basis (which explains our cup exploits). Our squad however, is lacking, and that explains our league troubles. At Villarreal, Pellegrini showed he could create an exciting and attacking team on a limited budget. A Champions League semi-final and a 2nd place La Liga finish showed that he knows how to punch above his weight.

Liverpool have been punching above their weight for the last 6 years whether we like to admit it or not. We have never once been rightly favourites for the league and our wage bill pales in significance to Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and now Man City. With that lack of pulling power, how can we attract the so called ‘mercenaries’ of the game? They do make a difference after-all, unless you really believe it’s just a funny coincidence how many players were ‘always fans and always had the dream of playing for Liverpool’.

If you feel like you need a bit of convincing on Pellegrini, a bit of amateur research should show you the way. His one season at Real Madrid was an unfortunate one, a 96 point hall wasn’t enough to overhaul Barcelona but his qualities shone through in his dignified management of the huge egos thrust upon him.

The faltering football of last season should not cloud our judgment of the work Rafa did at Liverpool. We went close to the league and just fell short, but I feel we have something to build on now in this next epoch, unlike 2004, and for me, Pellegrini is the answer.

If appointed, I think it’s important for Liverpool fans to get over the fact Kenny Dalglish missed out and fully back the new manager. We cannot afford to start a new era under the Chilean with the fans split because of nostalgia for Dalglish.

I have heard some arguments against Pellegrini, and I don’t think anything is certain in football so there is no 100% correct answer. For me though, Liverpool need evolution not revolution and Manuel Pellegrini is the footballing and sensible choice, surely?

I think that we need a British manager who knows the league and the market well to re-establish us as a leading club and to at least be in for a shout to win the league. Pellegrino surely is a good manager, but I have had enough French and then Spanish influx into the club for quite a while now.

i have been championing kenny for the job but, if this speculation is true then i for one would get 100% behind pellegrini

  • King Kong says:

When you have the best players at your disposal and spend that much of money in one season (more than total BPL summer transfer funds all add up together) and still not win anything…it’s so fail. Nevertheless average Roy’s appointment is a signal of intent for mediocrity next season. Overall we are going to be crap next season.

    Hello

It would be nice to have a British manager but I think the credentials of pellegrini are worth the effort and we should all back him or whoever comes in because they will need our support.

We dont know what has really been going on behind the scenes so until we find out we should not judge Purslow and Broughton just yet.

I am sure Broughton does not want to spend his time connected to Liverpool as Phil Thompson wouldnt want to spend to much time working for Chelsea!!

Get behind our new manager at all costs..

i would love pellegrini – whilst hodgson would be a ‘safe’ appointment, it doesnt set the pulse racing. pellegrini did well with both villareal and then succeeded with madrid (despite being sacked) and his more attacking mentality would hopefully bring some excitement watching liverpool. heres hoping…

  • rowan says:

He would also increase our chances of signing alexis sanchez.

  • Red Sky says:

Name 1 good British Manager who has the tactical ability, pulling power and cv to do the job? I say bring in Pelligrini or Rikard…

  • Rick says:

Could He build on the Rafalution???
    What a crap.
    Firstly, RAFALUTION IS OVER. FACT.
IF YOU SACK BENITEZ AFTER 7TH PLACE AND NINETEEN DEFEATS, THAT MEAN THAT RAFALUTION HAS MISERABLY FAILED.
    FACT.
There’s no reason to start a new rafalution with a poor clone of Rafa Benitez like Pellegrini.
Pellegrini had played an useless spanish “tic – tac” at Villareal & He collected a memorable failure at Highest Levels at Madrid, WITH RESOURCES, PLAYERS line up.
PELLEGRINI SOLD SNEJDER & ROBBEN: BEST PLAYERS OF THIS SEASON: FACT.
    THESE ARE FACTS.
I like Roy Hodgson, Frankie Rjkaard or Joechim Loew.

  • Rick says:

Pellegrini is free: Liverpool has been only waiting to finalise a deal with Roy Hodgson.
    FACT.

  • ndururu kenya says:

go 4 pelligrini he will be able 2 transform our team from defenceve 2 more attacking football even lucas will score more goals.

  • Chris Severs says:

Rick, your lack of knowledge in thinking Pellegrini is a Benitez clone is shocking. As are your recommendations.

    Thanks for reading though.

  • magnumopus says:

    Rick,
Get a life mate! Pel didn’t sell the two Dutchmen. He was forced to let them go by the President of the club. If you knew about Madrid you would know that their history is to always rule the roost over their managers! He’s not a clone of Rafa but I am not sure he knows how to win in the EPL!

  • Frank says:

    Rick;

Pellegrini did not sack Robben and Sneijder, It was club president Florentino Perez, and arse licking argie Valdano and Pellegrini raised his voice against those sells, that is why he was sacked after beating an all time record with points and goals at Madrid

And that IS A FACT (Rafa Benitez)

  • Chris Severs says:

    Magnumopus,

What is this ‘knows how to win the EPL’? There’s not many managers out there who have. I can think of 6 only in the world and besides Kenny we’re not going to get Wenger, Mourinho, Ancelotti or Ferguson!

Dalglish for me though would only be the peoples choice rather than the right move for Liverpool FC in my opinion. I’ve heard many good arguments in favour of Dalglish however.

  • Torre9 says:

    Rick, you are seriously lazy.
    1. Pellegrini is nothing like Rafa, He plays a much more expansive and attacking style.
    2. At Real he didn’t win anything, but he did have to contend with an awesome Barca team. In fact his team collected Real’s biggest ever points tally (which with their rich history is pretty good) plus the most amount of goals real have ever scored in a season.
    3. He is Chilean, not Spanish!
    4. The President Perez buys and sells players along with Jorge Valdano (please watch La Liga, before commentating)
    5. He was amazing at Villareal and got the best out of players. Brought through youngsters and got amazing players from South America with a ltd budget. Helped make Forlan the much improved player he is today and regularily competed for 4th with a small club like Villareal.

So Rick in other words SHUT UP!

  • Rick says:

I refer to football style: spanish tic – tac.
It’s the same style of Rafa and in my view, time is over for this adress at Anfield.

“4 The President Perez buys and sells players along with Jorge Valdano (please watch La Liga, before commentating)”

I always watch La Liga. Pellegrini has not a strong character: it’s a fact. With Mourinho on charge, it won’t be impossible for Perez & Valdano & Butragueno choosing players. The Key Words is charisma: Pellegrini has not the stature.

  • rowan says:

    @rick:

‘The Key Words is charisma: Pellegrini has not the stature’

    ….and Roy Hodgson does?
