What Fabio Capello should say to his players:
For many of you this will be your last World Cup in the prime of your years. A last chance of lifting the trophy that every aspiring footballer dreams about as a kid. You are lucky people to be in this position, to be in a position to win a trophy that will bring joy to millions for many years to come. If you don’t take the opportunity and feel you’ve played at your best, you will regret it for the rest of your lives. There is always pressure when any England football team goes out and plays a match, especially so at a World Cup, but I believe the most important thing you can do is to realise why you are here. You are footballers, it is your job to play football, you are here because you are the best in the country and because I believe you can win the seven games needed to be world champions. It is as simple as that, it doesn’t matter what people are saying outside this dressing room about you, it’s what is said in here that counts. I believe in you and when you go out on the pitch, I want you to just think about what I have told you, play without fear and without pressure, play as you would if it were any other match and you are guaranteed to play at your best. If all of you play at your best, I know it will be enough.

Seven steps, seven steps is all it takes to win the most coveted prize in football. It seems quite easy really when you think about it like that but many great teams have fallen by the wayside in their pursuit of the World Cup. To make it all the way to the top, the team must first and foremost be united. I know over the last few months, things haven’t been easy but for the next few weeks, all of that must be put behind us for otherwise we will fall. We must take this tournament one step at a time and not look too far ahead, never assume a victory or become complacent for all the teams are at this tournament for a reason. Each step we take will become harder and more arduous but all we have to do is to stay united and as one we can make the journey to the final a whole lot easier. Players score goals but teams win World Cups so any reservations you have about people in this squad, leave them at the door as I won’t tolerate anyone undermining what we’ve worked so hard to build, a team to win the greatest prize in sport.
