Hodgson’s Selection Conundrum: Should he show faith in youth?

|

With the season only weeks away and the delay in finding and naming Roy Hodgson as Liverpool manager, what does the new season bring in new signings?

Hodgson spent time potentially looking throughout the close season for signings to sustain Fulham’s stay in the Premiership, so what new players and most importantly what cash do we have to allow him to bring in new players, undoubtedly our chief scout Eduardo Macia must have been lining up new players so does Hodgson take stock of his squad and rely on Eduardo’s skill or does he allow first teamers to leave without replacing them.

Recent acquisition’s Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton for £1.7 million and Raheem Sterling from QPR for £1.5 million shows intent of bringing in quality youngsters from lower leagues, but most importantly does this mean these kids will be thrust into premiership action quicker then expected due to the current financial restrictions or were they just purchased to keep up with UEFA`s quota of having to name at least 8 home grown players in their squad of 25.

I am a great believer in showing faith to footballers who have no fear; you only have to look what Arsene Wenger has done at Arsenal over the last few years in blooding kids into the Carling Cup to appreciate what experience at the highest level does for these players, such players as Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey who have fulfilled initial expectations and matured into full internationals for there countries.

I hope Hodgson has the courage to blood other youngsters such as Stephen Darby, Daniel Pacheco and even Nikola Saric who so far have had limited first team action gain valuable experience in playing alongside the regular stars that we have.

The problem I foresee is the owners and more importantly Christian Purslow wanting quick success and not allowing Hodgson to build a team capable of challenging for a title that all Liverpool supporters crave for.

We can only hope that such stars as Gerrard and Torres can believe that Hodgson has the contacts and players in mind to assist them in making us a force again amongst the elite of world soccer, or as I predict we will be a mid table team in 12 months time and looking for a new manager again.

Born in Hillingdon in Middx in 1970 i`ve been supporting Liverpool since i was 7 when my nan brought me my first shirt.
The great old days seem far away from when i was a boy but hopefully good things are on the horizon.

Our team is not as bad as people say and I am convinced that Roy will make the current team perform a lot better than last season.

What do we need, well, I’d like to think that left-back is a position that has to be prioritised. Jovanovic is coming in and lets wait and see whether any of our supposed strikers Babel and Kuyt will be used as such. In that case we’d need some wingers, well, we’d need some wingers anyway because neither Kuyt nor Babel are exactly convincing in the wide positions, aren’t they.

I don’t see the problem you see. Hodgson seems to be a very decent and honourable man. No more boat-rocking from the manager then. The result will be that the club will be more stable than last season. And we may have new owners soon anyway.

Welcome aboard, doom-mongers. What will you do if Stevie and Nando stay, Hodgson gets the best out of the team, bloods youngsters too the squad and lets his experience count. Will you then go and support another club where you can paint everything in black without any reasonableness?

this is my biggest frustration with liverpool. i am suprised this is the only article i’ve come across over this subject. the past few seasons i have been reading about quality coming up through the reserves and youth set-up only for the same players to be loaned out (e.g nemeth) and ultimately sold on (e.g spearing) pacheco is someone barca cried over when he joined us and what did rafa do for him?
f.f.s roy, do the right thing, we’ve spent a lot of cash recently but it’s been unecessary, a lot of the solutions have been languishing in our reserves and more hungry than a lot of the first-teamers probably. eccleston, amoo, pacheco, sterling all deserve a chance and how else will they develop unless they are playing against quality. in 6 months they will have acclimatised and we’ll have a truly formidable squad.

if roy does this then he’s the man as far as im concerned.

he aint my first-choice but he’s got the job so we need to give him our support.

This article asks a interesting question, try to buy success by adding one or two glamor names or use the youth system?,

Personally i would love to see the youngsters given a chance, after all the spine of the team is there, let the youngster play to aid this spine and let them play without fear,

Trouble is it can take a while for these lads to settle, This will mean the media and impatient fans will start to get on the managers case and start saying i told you so Roy isn’t the man blah blah blah.

So the easiest choice is to try and buy ready made players, the best choice would be to bring these youngsters through the system.

If this is really a new start for LFC then lets hope for real change otherwise it will be same old same old.

well said tom, lets go for the best choice!! (hopefully)
