If Roy buys British, who would you like to see?

|

In a recent newspaper interview, the new Liverpool Manager Roy Hodgson said:

“We have to find a basis of English players because of the way UEFA and Premier League rules are going. We’ve got to get more home-grown players otherwise we’re going to struggle to get our squad numbers together. Kenny Dalglish can play a very, very important role in this. The club has already brought in a couple of players like Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling. Top English talent. We have finished the World Cup with more players than any other team but looking at the squad at Melwood, it did seem very small in terms of seniors.”

Over the last few years of his time in charge, Rafa spent quite a substantial amount of money on talented young players, the majority of which were foreign. The reasoning for this foreign policy? Talented, young English players don’t come cheap.

From his recent comments Roy Hodgson looks set to strengthen the Liverpool squad by recruiting the services of some top English players. This is a decision that will be welcomed by many Liverpool fans. The question is who can we afford to sign? This, of course will depend on summer departures.

Personally I would welcome players such as Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Ashley Young and James Milner but the combined cost of these players would be roughly £60m (and that’s for a list of players that are either out of form or can’t get into their current sides first team, with the exception of Milner).

I believe that Liverpool will find it incredibly hard to sign the type of high quality, British player that we need to both satisfy UEFA regulations and to take the football club forward. They are just too expensive. In my opinion there are only 2 scenarios which would enable Liverpool to compete for such players. Cash in on Torres and Gerrard or find new owners, and quickly!

As I don’t want to get into the debate of whether we should or shouldn’t sell our prized assets, let us be stupidly optimistic for a moment. Allow me to wave my magic wand and put new rich, Middle Eastern owners in charge by tomorrow morning. Which British talent would you like to see Liverpool move for?

I have been a Liverpool fan for 22 years. I live in Watford and as a kid my dad would take me to see the Hornets every week. John Barnes quckly became my footballing idol. When he moved on to Liverpool I began to follow the team and have supported them ever since

  • Mac says:

I think Gary Cahill and Joe Cole would be good signings.

  • Alex.:L says:

  • Harry says:

Ashley Young and Aaron Ramsey, but those are probably just pipe dreams at the moment.

Stephen Warnock and Stephen Ireland would both be useful additions to the squad, especially Warnock, as we’re short of useful left-backs at the moment.

Danny Murphy’s 33 now, so time isn’t on his side but I’m sure he could put in a few decent shifts in midfield for the team.

  • Stu says:

Id more then happy take, Stephen Island, Stephen Taylor, Carlton Cole, and I know hes welsh and would never happen but Gareth Bale!

  • Zahir says:

We should buy all the WC winning British super stars and those who did not even make it! Why talk about British stars? We should only be talking about quality. Why talk about players who were discarded by us or don’t even make the first team at lesser clubs? We got rid of Crouch because he considered himself ahead of Torres in the pecking order! Would we like him to be played at the expense of Torres? We already have Jonkovic now. Those who are really top class English players are beyond our reach. So buying second class stuff will not leave Roy with many supporters even before the season begins!!!

  • steve mcauley says:

i think if it’s a british basis roy’s looking for then i would probably go for bridge of onouha (who i think qualifies)for L/B, cahill C/B, noble or parker to replace masch, joe cole (if possible), darren bent or carltoncole C/F and maybe SWP R/W.
gossling, being a freebie, would be worth a punt too!

  • ayee says:

    joe hart

    johnson cahill shawcross bridge

    cattermole ireland

    joe cole gerrard ashley young

    agbonlohor

  • Tom says:

I think we should go all out to sign Joe Cole as a player of his calibre is too hard to pass up since he’s out of contract. Dan Gosling of Everton is also in the same situation and I think we should snap him up as he has a big future IMO.

Stephen Ireland, as many have mentioned, would be a great signing and how he doesn’t get in Man City’s starting XI I don’t know. Onuoha or Richards would be good for some versatility at the back.

I think these players are very realistic targets. As for a left back, we may have to look outside of Britain.

  • tom says:

Milner and shawcross and Joe Cole are the only worthy additions, I would maybe gamble on Stephen Ireland, got a feeling he will be feeling like he has got something 2 prove,

  • Thomas says:

    J. Milner-RW
    G. Cahill or S. Taylor-CB
    S. Warnock-LB cover
    C. Cole or D. Bent-ST

Does anyone else think that Kuyt will be played up front with Torres now that RH is manager?

Also, I wonder if he gives Babel a chance up front too?

LFC would only need wingers and LB as a result.

    Would love to get Milner…

  • Hem1 says:

These are the players i would like to see us make moves for.

David Bentley, the guy is class and could be available for a reasonable price.

Micah Richards, will certainly be a future england player and has plenty of quality, can play Cb/Rb as well.

Mark Noble, good replacement should we have vacancys opening up in our midfield, good in defence and attack, need i say more.

Ashley Young, versatile attacker who could easily solve our LM/LW problem, probably out of our price range.

Victor Moses, only recently moved to wigan, but hes a adaptable player who is good with both feet we should have bought him in in the first place, would be much happier with him as aoption than degen/riera etc.

Agbonlahor, pace to burn, good striking option.

    Gary Cahill, no nonsense defender.

  • YNWalkA says:

And who exactly are these ‘Talented, young English players don’t come cheap’? as you put it.

There aren’t any! therefore, you do NOT buy, especially at these inflated prices, for these ordinary, so called, ‘Talented young players’.
This IS the problem with british football, we treat very ordinary players as something that they are not!.

  • ac3 says:

dude.. why english players.. their style of football is mesd up.. runing down the lines. and crossing into the box 90% of the time reaching the defenders head… i’d like to see sum1 like sneijder..and iniesta in midfield and we need a flawless strikers… higuain.. maybe fabiano… and in defence. maybe ashley cole.. sergio ramos.. and so on.. ” all this with stupidly optimistic thought of having a midde eastern guy owning liverpool”

  • Dennis says:

J Hart Of Man City GK
M Richards Of Man City RB/CB
S Johnson Of Man City CM
S Ireland Of Man City AM/CM
    L Cattermole Of Sunderland DM/CM
A Dawson Of Hull City LB
    S Taylor Of Newcastle CB
    G Cahill Of Bolton CB
S W Phillips Of Man City RW
    D Bent Of Sunderland FD
C Cole Of West Ham FD
    P Crouch Of Tottenham FD
G Agbonglahor Of Aston Villa FD
A Young OF Aston Villa LW/AM

All these players could do well at our beloved club, but the price to prize them away from their clubs may scare Hodgson off most of them.

  • YNWalkA says:

The only post that makes sense on this blog is………..ZAHIR…….To buy more than one or maybe two, british players, will see us MID-TABLE contenders!.
