In regards to Torres and Gerrard, are contracts worth anything anymore?

|

It was interesting to hear Roy Hodgson`s comments regarding the current situation of our top players and some of their desires to leave our great club.

“I can’t nail their feet to the floor, I can only try and persuade them that if they stay here, we will have a good season and it’s a good club to play for”

Hold on a minute, are these players not tied down to a contact, these superstars adored by millions across the world, of which earn the club and themselves millions in advertising and ludicrous amounts of money?

Steven Gerrard, who only last year put pen to paper on a lucrative 4 year deal worth £26 million pounds has been increasingly linked to Real Madrid. How Liverpool can even consider selling undoubtedly our finest player for years for a reported £20 million to anyone is beyond me, the fact he is 30+ does not even come into it, he has a bigger part to play in Liverpool, born and bred there, his long term future is the same as many a former player, training badges etc and then into management, his path should be based around Kenny Dalglish. Players who will kiss the badge in front of thousands of supporters each week who themselves pay good money to watch them should show some sort of loyalty.

Yossi Benayoun is a prime example; he signed a new two year contract in July 2009 keeping him at the club until 2013 for a reportedly £70,000 a week, despite the fact he was only a bit player in Rafa`s mind and the annoyance he was played in different positions, he kept faith with the direction the club was heading and pledged his allegiance to us.  He said at the time:

“’I am very happy that we have reached an agreement. Of course, to be at a club like this is a dream come true and I want to keep playing here.”

Yet after a dismal year last year, he decided enough was enough and jumped ship, his reasons for leaving were based around Rafa`s policies, the same person the year before who had convinced him the future was bright, some might say that a 30 year old bit part player was worth trading in at around the £6 million mark, but a year before we were offered twice that and never sold, and when was the last time Liverpool sold a good player to our rivals?

Can  these player’s contracts ever be relied upon to be worth the paper they are written on, or will money always be the main priority? The club has had one bad year and the blame solely was put on Rafa Benitez`s head (alleged trouble with our top stars on team selection and very little depth in quality players) which caused mayhem and unrest, so surely with news that the owners have no say in the direction of the club anymore, Benitez has gone and a new English manager in place, the only way is up?

I hope Hodgson can start to work his magic and show these stars the way forward and even use the limited funds to entice well known stars back to the Kop. The future is bright, possible new owners, a new stadium and bag full’s of cash seemed a distance away a year ago, but seem to only be months away now, come on lads the future is bright, stick with us like with have stuck with you.

Born in Hillingdon in Middx in 1970 i`ve been supporting Liverpool since i was 7 when my nan brought me my first shirt.
The great old days seem far away from when i was a boy but hopefully good things are on the horizon.
Currently living in Ireland i am a member of the "Moate Liverpool supporters Club" of which make yearly tours to watch at least 1 game.

Contracts help keep the value of a player high, if a team does decide to transfer them.

I would not put too much faith in the press regarding player sales. Wait until it happens before you believe it.

The problem i have is that okay Rafa may have made some bad decions during the year with team selection and tactics but come on…if you put Gerrard on a lie detecter and ask him wether he had a great year as a player, he’ll be sweating in no time!!! and Torres…i’m sorry but when you on the field you awesome, but for what have the season!!!would just love to see these two players say,”Sorry fans, we know we let you down!!we know you pump millions into this club and our pockets and we giong to make it up to you, our failing as player for bad form and bad fitness are unexceptable and we will go out next year and pay you all back”, but what do we get…players not saying a word and making us bite our nails off in anticipation waiting for them to decide!! So not fair on us and we the people that make you great!!!

here’s how i see it. the liverpool TEAM were crap last season! A TEAM which included gerrard, torres, mascherano, johnson and benayoun, these players who have and are “considering their future” would do well to remember that! “we must have CL football” or “we must be challenging for honours” in other words – we are too good to be playing with this s***e, well guess what? YOU WERE PART OF THE S***E! you all played your part in the failure but now you contemplate jumping ship to further your own selfish ambitions! you should be privileged to represent such a great club and if you all had just an ounce of the character of pepe reina or even arda turan, who is desperate to wear the liver bird, then maybe we WOULD be challenging for honours! so, as someone who helps keep you in the lap of luxury, i would tell you to put your over-inflated egos to one side, take your huge heads out of your arses, knuckle down and drag our beloved club out of the mire that YOU ALL helped put us in! none of you are bigger than LFC, not even the ever so successful england captain!

perhaps a tad unfair to torres there, i admit that, when fit and not walking around in a huff every time he got a tap on the ankle, then he did alright. but even so, i think he owes us at least one season!

Yeah i totally agree.I dnt thnk they should leave especially Gerrard.I am confident that this could be our season of bringing the title back home & nxt season we’ll be challenging for the Champions League.but i think Torres is relactant to talk of his future for he thnks gerrard might leave.Gerrard shuld stay & i’m sure Torres will follow suit.come stevie i know u dnt wanna leave.Let’s stick 2gthr & make history.YNWA!

All you guys so far have a valid point – They owe us for the mess that was supposed to be the 2009/10 season. Unacceptable performances on the pitch by all apart from Pepe, unacceptable decisions by management and unacceptable with the 2 goonies at the top.

I hope LFC read these posts and take note, especially the players – this is an open forum so read and be honourable to LFC instead of cowards.

Failing that give me a graction of the wages and i’ll sweat blood for LFC

    Goonies out!!!!

SG, Nando – what other club has a tradition like ours – none ! LFC has the natural beauty compared to the plastic surgery being carried out at other clubs.
