Is it important for Sammy to stay at Anfield?

|

With Roy Hodgson now getting his feet firmly under the table at our great club, how long is it before he starts reviewing the backroom staff and their roles within the club under his leadership?

Continued speculation links Hodgson former right hand man at Fulham Mike Kelly to the same position at Anfield, so where does this leave Sammy Lee in the pecking order of jobs? Having signed a two year contract in May 2008 to be assistant manager to Rafa Benitez, Sammy had been temporarily in charge since Rafa`s departure which left him in control of monitoring our players in the World Cup, but does he sit anywhere in Hodgson`s mindset?

With John Aldridge recently calling for calm within the Anfield ranks and even asking for more ex-players to be involved in scouting positions, can Liverpool finally go back to the old routine of tried and tested football with support from a home grown backroom staff?

Sammy’s career has seen him come through the ranks of apprentice to finally realising his dream of assisting running the great club he always loved, spells with England and Bolton as coach and manager propelled him back into the spotlight after being brought back to the fold under Graeme Souness in 1993.

Roy Evans and Gerald Houllier both realised the potential he was showing as reserve team coach and he deservedly gained recognition for his roles when he was promoted under Houllier to the first team. From this, England in the form of Sven-Goran Eriksson. called upon Lee to assist part time in the National team set up in 2001 and then leave Liverpool in 2004 to take the role up in 2004.

Spells at Bolton as coach under Sam Allardyce and then Manager for a short time added to his CV but his heart was always at Liverpool so when the call came from Rafa asking for his assistance he jumped at the chance in May 2008 after the departure of Alex Miller.

With Rafa now at Inter and the possibility of joining up with him again, should more be done to keep one of  our ex-players so he can assist in the re-building of our proud club,  or do we need a brand new start?

Only time will tell.
