Is anyone else torn over Insua?

|

When I heard about the news that Liverpool’s Emiliano Insua’s move to Fiorentina had stalled I was slightly indifferent. On the one hand, we are keeping a talented young left back for the moment at least but at the same time we won’t be getting the £5million that could be spent on acquiring a more experienced and accomplished defender. After the defeat to Borussia Moenchengladbach yesterday, Roy Hodgson said about the player:

“Insua decided that he is still undecided about his future”

This certainly doesn’t make the future of the Argentine any clearer, but I think we can safely assume that he won’t be at the club for the long term. The apparent collapse of his move to Florence was rumoured to be down to wage demands. The question now becomes whether any club who are interested in the 21 year old are prepared to meet the demands of the player.

Insua has been much maligned by some Liverpool fans over the past year, some of it has been fair and some of it has not, but I have always made clear my position that it is always difficult for a youngster to become a first team regular when he was having to play during a difficult season for the club as well as the fact there was no proper backup (with Aurelio injured) to take the load off his young shoulders.

Even taking into account those difficult circumstances though, it is difficult to ignore his deficiencies. They were not technical skills which could be improved over the time but his apparent lack of pace exposed the Reds backline on quite a few occasions last season. Some of this can be put right through better positional play but there was this nagging feeling that he was maybe not quite cut out for top Premier League action.

Nevertheless, with a season’s experience under his belt, there wouldn’t have been any harm in keeping him as the reserve full back, where he could learn from a senior figure in the position and develop his game over the next few seasons, playing significantly less than last campaign, but still playing enough in cup competitions to gain the required knowledge. On his arrival at Anfield, Roy stated he felt Insua was a good player:

“I saw him play in the last three days and I like him both as a player and on a personal level.”

With the re-signing of Fabio Aurelio though, I believe it is probably time for Insua to leave. Why now you ask considering they were both in the same squad last season? The fact remains that if Aurelio’s injury problems recur again then Insua will be left as the sole left back. I feel that Roy has re-signed Fabio to be a back-up and due to his injury record, it seems a good option for Hodgson, lessening his game time while getting the best out of him when he plays. So I would expect Insua still to be sold, and then hopefully in the not too distant future, the Reds will purchase a good dependable left back who is both experienced and physically fit.

He’s an awful fullback!!! Get rid!

  • NEILFC says:

Worst defender Ive ever seen at Liverpool, slow and always out of position. While getting rid of him get rid of NGOG too!!! These players will not win you the title and were ever presents last term. Thats why we finished 7th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pete says:

Keep him,he is just 21 he’s got the potential to become a very good left back. There are not to many good left backs at the moment apart from Cole,Kolarov and Bastos.

  • RedMist!!! says:

Got to disagree with you over Ngog!

21 and scored 8 goals last season. Good pace and skill and big potentiel to get better as he gets stronger. People judge Ngog against Torres which is unfair. We need another forward who’s further down the line in his progession. However we should keep Ngog as a 3rd choice forward.

As for Insua! he’s just areally poor player! Overweight and lacking agility!! Get rid.

he is a decent left back like lucas will get better plus he is homegrown but santa cruz,8m or peter “lurch” crouch 11m no brainer both injured last season

  • Davie says:

Not bad coming forward but caught out to many times last season. Hes quite keen to go for the tackle, jumps in & gets beaten. Maybe not the standard we require, hes still young so no need to be to harsh.

When insua was in the reserves i watched and hoped he could break into the team as he was showing real promise. when he broke through he looked to be fulfilling that promise, and again i was delighted. however last year he was weak at defence being caught out time and time again (some mistakes cost us badly). when i saw we had resigned aurelio, i thought yes. so as far as insua is now concerened lets get shut asap.

Insua isn’t all that bad…and yes maybe due to the fact that he did not have any competition for the LB role….it MAY have made him a bit complacent…famr him out and develop him would be an option since Mr HUang looks very likely to take over so funds wouldn’t really be an issue then

  • Eric says:

He’s a decent left back and don’t forget that he’s only 21. Last season he was solid at the back and provided a few assists. He might lack pace but he more than makes up for that with his solid defending. With him and Aurelio, I don’t think we need to buy a new left back. However, if he does leave (which would be a pity, considering his potential) then I’d suggest we get Taye Taiwo from Marseille.

  • marcus says:

worse full back to grace our club in years, what rafa saw in him was beyond me

  • shane says:

Insua is as bad a defender as I’ve seen. Okay there’s Titus Bramble anyone would struggle to be worse than him. To be honest I think Fiorentina realised what they were getting themselves into.

  • shane says:

    Taiwo doesn’t look 24 to me , I’d say he’s probably 34

  • Rob, Chester says:

Good going forward at times but I doubt he will make it because he is embarrasingly slow in a league that puts significant value on pace and athleticism. I doubt losing half a stone will speed him up that much. He could do well in Spain or Italy but I don’t see him as a good prospect for Liverpool even if eventually develops some of the positional sense he very clearly lacks.

  • james says:

Defensively bakrupt, anyone who cuts in is home free. Must go.

  • Hoot says:

He’s a promising defender who will come good.

All you naysayers, with your attitude, no up and coming academy player is ever going to be good enough for you.

All young players need time and experience to grow into their best. For petes sake show some patience and support our own Liverpool players, especially the young uns.

  • Mullar says:

If we want to challenge the top four places or the champion, the current squad, particular those at the back, is simply not good enough. IMHO, both Insua and Ngog should be released.
