The Huang Bid: Was it all just hot air?

|

“Kenny is good at making deals, as in facilitating deals for other people. He would certainly be capable of bringing people together. But Kenny is also very, very good at promoting Kenny.”

This is a quote from a source close to former Liverpool takeover bidder Kenny Huang talking to SportingIntelligence.com at the start of the month. For me, it kind of somes up what’s happened over the past few weeks with the Chinese businessman’s bid for the club. First it was said that Huang was a billionaire, next it was said he had rich backers although he himself did not have the money to finance a takeover, and then the British media revealed that his backers were in fact CIC (the Chinese Investment Corporation.) Again, this was denied, and then nobody knew exactly who was backing Huang’s bid for the club.

Another revelation came on the 12th August when Huang’s business partner Marc Ganis, who had outlined Huang’s bid a few days before stated to the Daily Telegraph that they actually hadn’t identified investors who could finance the bid:

“We haven’t yet decided to submit a formal proposal but are interested in looking at an investment there. I suspect that is obvious. We also have not identified the potential investors.”

Eventually on Friday though, Huang revealed in a statement that he had withdrawn his interest in buying Liverpool FC. Apparently, according to the Daily Telegraph, Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton issued certain demands that Huang was not willing to submit to.

In my opinion, Huang could have been serious about a bid for Liverpool but there has been no credible evidence suggesting who Huang’s backers were. They may have outlined proposals for a potential bid but even Huang’s business partner Marc Ganis suggested that no investors had been identified to take the bid forward.

It was a very similar situation as to when Huang tried to take a minority share in NBA team Cleveland Cavaliers last year. After months and months of speculation about him buying into the Basketball team, it was revealed in May that no bid was ever on the table. This was despite the fact that even on the NBA’s official website, an Associated Press article was published stating that Huang had purchased a stake in the team.

Despite all the confusion surrounding his bid, all that has really come out of it is that many football fans in England now know who Kenny Huang is. He is a facilitator for deals for other people rather than having any financial investment of his own in the deals themselves. Maybe he did have a backer, we might never know now but it’s time for the Liverpool board to find someone who both talks the talk and walks the walk who actually reveals their financial backers to them, putting their offer on the table and making a bid that is real and concrete, and one that best serves Liverpool FC.

“In any takeover situation, when people resort to announcing it to the media, you have to question the seriousness of the offer. If the name of the prospective buyer comes out before the deal is done then probably it is never going to be done.”

I said this in earlier post and was shot down in flames. Now after you read an article online you write this drivel!!!

    Way to formulate an opinion!!!

Keith Harris is dealing with it a Man Utd fan can we trust him to get the right buyer? Yes he represented Villa, West Ham, Newcastle and Man City. But just look at what happend after West Ham had to find new investors and got taken over, Mike Cashley at Newcastle is a joke, and now Randy Yanky Lerners true colours are showing. Yes his City deal appears to be good to City, but where talking about a Historical club like ours a world renowned club a rival of Man Utd, Keith Harris was 1 of the Red Knights trying to buy Utd, do you think hed want Liverpool to move forward, or would he be a professional and treat it as just business. It might be just hear say but the board keep an eye on Harris and the bidder
