Player to sign “within the next 48 hours”?

|

Liverpool are expected to complete the signing of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones “within the next 48 hours,” according to the Liverpool Echo. The Reds had a bid of £2million rejected last week for the player but it is believed an improved offer was made for the 28 year old. This is despite a statement on Boro’s website yesterday reading:

“Boro have this afternoon confirmed that they have not reached an agreement with any club for the sale of goalkeeper Brad Jones.”

The Echo believes however that discussions are moving along in the right direction and that a deal is expected to be completed soon for the Australian who would become Pepe Reina’s understudy.

why the hell are we after a keeper when we have hundreds at the club. Surely Diego is good enough to back Reina up without signing Jones.

Jones is an awful keeper – and Hodgson once again proves that he is a championship quality manager.

Buy a striker FFS Roy, a winger and a left back.

  • Jeremy says:

Why are ppl still asking why Roy’s looking to buy players that most likely won’t start in the first XI?? Get it into your heads that he needs to have a set number of “home-grown” players!! Plus he’s actually trying to build a squad and not just a first team like Benitez did… with all these players, we won’t have the same problems we had last season when(if) all the injuries pile up.

  • boris says:

    @ jeremy

i dont think rafa could quite afford to build the squad when he had to sell players from the squad in order to buy players.

so he was unable to add more depth to the team, because players that he bought were direct replacements for the ones he sold.

  • Decky says:

Because Lee diego will be sold and Jones is only a back up despite playing for australia is considered as home grown and so will help fill our quota of 8 required for the season, thats why most clubs will have at least 1 home grown keeper in the squad

  • Decky says:

Boris roy is in the same postion just doing a better job

  • Woy says:

@DEcky – doing a better job? he hasnt started yet. judge him at the end of the season and lets see how we have done. IMO we really should have signed a striker and a left back by now. We have some of our toughest games at the start of the seaon. lose to arsenal and at Man city and the vultures will start circling again!!

  • CDL says:

So he is a championship manager even though he has convinced Gerrard and Torres to stay and signed Joe Cole? Hodgson has always taken clubs further than he should have in the past and has always got the most out of his players. I think they are already looking for a striker and left back but it doesn’t happen overnight. Perhaps Cavilieri wants to leave but i’m sure with all your wisdom Lee you kow exactly whats going on behind the scenes and would be able to do better.

  • karim says:

Woy – agreed if we lose, but what if we win and are sitting at the top of the table at the 1st international break? Think positive!

  • Nathan Pardoe says:

Jeremy – Brad Jones is a 28 year old Australian! Not so sure that the ‘home grown rule’ applies here! I personally think that it’s more about Roy believing that Cavalieri isn’t up to it or he wants to leave. (first team football) Either case we should let our manager make that decision. Why are some of you having a go at Hodgson before he’s even started the season? Do you not think that he is trying to get in another LB or a CF?? He just wants to make sure we get the right quality. Leave the man alone he knows what he is doing!

  • en-wae says:

28? & an understudy for Pepe Reina?

  • dee says:

@ nathan brad actually quqlifies for ”home grown”, search d internet to get d fact.
The question i would rather want us to ans is, how many player in the squad presently cuts d ‘home grown’ quota? Joe cole, Gerrald, Johnson, Carraigher and probably spearing. Others like jonjo, pacheco, wilson, kelly etc are all U-21 and can play as many as possible as d rule stipulates. I think with these i c d reason for brads signing.

  • mark says:

#1 Jones certainly does count as a ‘homegrown’ player as he’s been in this country for 11 years.
    #2 He’s 28? Christ!
#3 Cavalieri is wanted by several clubs and we’re sure to make a profit on him.
#4 If a club is struggling to reach the ‘homegrown’ quota then ensuring that the sub keeper is one is the most common sense thing to do isn’t it? Good move Roy.
    #5 Arsenal want Jones too.
#6 Signing a sub keeper has to be the most boring transfer in football doesn’t it?!!

  • Neil says:

Jones qualifies as home grown given the fact he was in UK from 16 I believe.

  • jay says:

Nathan Pardoe, clearly you don’t keep up to date with the semantics of the home grown rule. Jones will qualify as he has lived in England for the required length for citizenship.

So, yes, that is exactly why he is being brought in, Cavalieri’s deficiencies or not.

  • daboy says:

Yes he is homegrown and he probrobly wont play much but could surprise.

  • chillpill says:

If he is home grown then good move Uncle Roy. I am hoping when the yanks are gone and the new owners come in, with money and investment that by the next transfer window we are in at least 3rd place and can by 1 or 2 top quality players to push on to the end of the season. The hope for at least a 4th or 3rd place finish, any thing more yippee. I think the future looks good, IF WE GET CASH RICH NEW OWNERS and with new manager in Uncle Roy things don’t look so bad. COME ON YOU SUPER REDS!!!!!

  • rassell says:

he isn’t good enough to be an understudy to riena, should riena be injured god forbid we will be in trouble.

  • Lookhere says:

His been around in England long enough to meet criteria for home grown IDIOTS
