Lawrenson: Roy is too cautious

|

Writing in his column in the Daily Mirror today, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has stated that he believes that Roy Hodgson needs to be more positive with his style of play:

“I would like to see Liverpool return to their old pressing game. In the past, any team visiting Anfield would be strangled in terms of time and space. That is the way they have got to play again, because it was missing the games against Blackpool, Sunderland or even West Brom. Maybe the crowd can play a role in that. I think this timidity started last January under Rafa Benitez, with quite a few of the players feeling sorry for themselves. Benitez also bought some very average personnel. The signings Hodgson has made – Joe Cole, Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles – have all been OK at best. It is time for everyone to raise their game. The tactics have been careful and cautious. It is time to take a few risks. You can’t tell me that a team containing Pepe Reina, Jamie Carragher, Stevie Gerrard, Cole and Fernando Torres cannot beat the majority of teams in the Premier League. Hodgson did a fantastic job at Fulham and improved every player in their squad. Now he has to do the same at Liverpool. He has not been there long, but he has got to start making a difference now – starting with the Merseyside derby on Sunday.”

Lawrenson also wrote about New England Sports Ventures:

“Like any new owner of a house, New England Sports Ventures will be looking for new furniture. Everybody will be starting from scratch and the performances of Hodgson and all the players will be judged. That is only to be expected. No-one can be bought in until the January transfer window but an improvement on the pitch must be instant.”

I wouldn’t say he’s too cautious, I’d say he hasn’t got a clue what the hell he’s doing as he’s completely out of his depth.

We now have new owners which is fantastic and if they have any sense then Roy will be swiftly sacked and replaced with someone more knowledgable who knows what it takes to win.

    Bye Roy

  • hero says:

With meireles on the right Roy looks a dud. Not overly cautious just stupid.

  • rassell says:

I would second that, the guy simply don’t have a clue….he has never managed top class players before and the only time he has managed a top team ie. Inter he failed misserably.

Get rid of him and bring in one of the following:

O’Neil as everything this guys does turns into gold starting from liecester, celtic villa….and he would do very well.

    Daglish need say no more.

Rykard the football would be out of this world.

  • rassell says:

But as a person hodgeson is a great man and i don’t mean to disrespect him in that front.

  • OSI says:

so ridiculous that lawro is coming out saying this, when he did his level best to hound out a manager who made his reputation putting out teams that were blindingly effective playing a “pressing game.”

legend or not, just keep it shut. you offer NOTHING of note as a pundit.

  • steve mcauley says:

have to agree with rassell on this one’ chelsea were quick to act with big phil when they knew from very early on that, despite his record, he just wasn’t right for them! mr henry needs to be just as decisive and start afresh!

  • PA says:

Agree with OSI above. The very style he spent the last two seasons criticising is the style he actually wants…go figure.

  • dj says:

    Totally agree with OSI.

This guy is a moron of a pundit.

  • Kaleem says:

OSI – So easy for people like Lawro and Souness to pass judgement and not be accountable for a single word. I looked at Lawro’s weekly predictions over a period and he got way below 50% right. Has he ever questioned his own judgement? Souness, kicked out of every managerial job he was given. Very few supporters feel any association with this selfish bunch. This compared to the likes of Dalglish, Rush, Fowler, etc who hardly ever talk such rubbish about the club.

  • Jay Wright says:

no Hodgson, no O’Neil, no managers with a record of defensive or long ball football. If we are not going to be guaranteed success on the pitch, I want a manager that will at least guarantee some good attacking football, with an intent to win at any opportunity

  • Kai says:

And where is Gus Hiddink when you need him? Or Pellegrini? They certainly know how to manage greatnes.

  • Akash says:

Before liverpool sign any player, we have to change new manager. Appoint Jose Mourinho.
NOW WE GOT NEW OWNER, SO WE GO FOR NEW MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
