The latest defeat came at home against Portsmouth at the weekend. With the backdrop of it being potentially Pompey’s last game, Hull should have capitalised on their visitor’s uncertain future, and nearly broke the deadlock when Ayala was picked out by a James Devitt cross in the tenth minute, but the Reds loanee could only volley the ball over the bar.
Playing alongside Steven Gerrard’s cousin Anthony at the heart of the Tigers defence for the ninth game in a row, Ayala was not at fault for the first goal as left back Andy Dawson kept Pompey striker David Nugent on side, and the forward made no mistake with his finish past Matt Duke. The Spanish defender was however culpable for the second early in the second half as he fouled Dave Kitson on the edge of the City penalty area. Pompey made Ayala pay for his indiscretion as Greg Halford blasted the ball home into the bottom corner via a deflection.
Former Reds player Nicky Barmby did get a goal back on the hour mark but it wasn’t enough as Hull slipped to a second home defeat in the space of a week. Incidentally, Ayala got his fifth yellow card of the season in his ninth match for the Tigers and will be suspended for the trip to Barnsley on Saturday. With Hull on a losing streak and conceding goals, it will be interesting to see whether Ayala gets his place back on his return from suspension.

Stupid comment, considering a large amount of our squad is foriegn.
He looks very good for Hull, maybe at fault for one goal but he’s still young. I can’t see him not getting straight back in the team, comfortable on the ball and solid in defence. Very nice seeing us with good centre backs again, been a while.
I was at the game against Portsmouth and Ayala was at fault for the first goal, it was his shocking piece of control that gifted Kitson the ball who then played Nugent through with the back 4 all over the place. I would also not blame him for the second goal either, it was never a free kick and Kitson conned a cheap one from a poor ref. Having seen all 9 games the young lad has played we are very grateful for him being here, while he still has alot to learn I hope he is given a chance at Liverpool in the next year or so.
Actually, Daniel was at fault for the first goal as he miscontrolled and lost the ball and was pulled out of position trying to correct his error. That said, he is a solid player and doesn’t look out of place in Hull’s defence. The experience will be beneficial and I expect him to develop into a first team regular for Liverpool on the back of his experience at Hull (just like Gary Ablett did)
