THREE Warnings about Frank Rijkaard

|

With growing doubts about the future of Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson and the departure of Frank Rijkaard from his job at Galatasaray yesterday, there has been increasing speculation that the Dutch manager could takeover at Anfield. On the one hand I would be very excited about the possibility of Rijkaard taking over if Roy was to lose his job. After all his attacking philosophy would be a breath of fresh air in contrast to our previous few managers; a reason many have also touted Kenny Dalglish as a possible contender in addition to his long standing ties to the club. On the other hand though, I think there has to be a few words of caution said about Rijkaard for there have also been many failures as well as successes in his relatively short managerial career.

1) The first warning comes from his time in Holland. He took over from Guus Hiddink as the Netherlands manager after the 1998 World Cup, with the task of winning Euro 2000 as the home nation. At the tournament, Rijkaard was heavily criticised for the team’s early performances in the group stages but the team gradually improved, beating eventual winners France 3-2 in the final group game and Yugoslavia 6-1 in the quarter final. They however lost on penalties to Italy in the semi-final and many in Holland believed Rijkaard should have at least guided Holland to the final considering they were the host nation. Rijkaard then proceeded to manage Sparta Rotterdam in the 2001/02 season and only managed to see his side relegated to the second division for the first time in the club’s history.

Get Unai Emery!! Young and talented. He did well even when Valencia is in a dire financial state. When Silva and Villa both left, his Valencia are still doing very well in the La Liga. Still unsure over Rijkaard.

    • Jay says:

oh yeah, get emery as well as guardiola as well as ancelloti as well as wenger as wel as ferguson as well as mourinho!! all of them are doin well right??
and its like its liverpool calling them!! 5 times winners,,,who would refuse?? ofcourse they will all tear of their contracts and rush to liverpool!!
      GET A LIFE!!!

  • m kop says:

There is no need for warning, if Liverpool was Barcelona when Rijkard was manager there would be no need for changing manager, anyone could manege that team.

The final game against Arsenal is a warning enaugh, when Wenger with a weaker team and one men down almost won CL mostly becouse of Rijakard’s tacktical mistakes (Ronaldinho was suddenly CF and Eto was winger, why, no one knows).

  • Paul says:

Id take Rijkaard at Anfield anytime, big name manager, won everything in the game, successful as a manager at Barca, capable with big name players, could attract any player we could afford, what’s not to like. Owners said last week that Roy’s job was safe but come Christmas if we’ve not turned a corner it would be a different story. Gotta move quick though, there will be other sides in Europe moving to get him!

  • Ken says:

Forget Frank Rijkaard and any other foreign manager. We need Dalglish back and we need Phil Thompson as his assistant.

    • Charles says:

Totally agree. Thomo would add passion and desire which were lacking so badly

      • KopThisMate says:

No offence intended, but you are proposing to install a manager who hasn’t managed a team in twenty years over a seasoned pro. Now i wouldnt pick Rijkard as there are better managers out there, my first choice would be Pelligrini. But your ridiculous attitude towards foreign managers is absurd. We currently have an English manager, who was suppsoedly Manager of the year last year, and look at where that has led us. Nationality counts for nought if you have no talent, and im sorry to say, but there are very few English managers with real talent. So before you knock prospective managers back because of their nationality, maybe you should look at what they have achieved and their football style. Your patriotism to English managers is absurd.

getting rijkaard in would be crazy, his onlu success was at barca really and we are a long way from them right now. we need to give roy a little more time to see if he can turn things around 10-15 games total. if not the managers need to find a replacement. 100% though if the situation hasn’t changed by the start of december we need a new manager so he has time to see what the problems in the team are and spend accordingly in janurary. if the squad does improve, even to mind table roy should be given a second transfer window and the rest of the season to make his mark on the club and we can go from there. however WE MUST NOT GET RELEGATED! that would be disasterous for the club

    • KopThisMate says:

You say that we must not get relegated, yet state that we need to give roy more time. Thats a contradiction if ive ever heard one. Maybe you should stay off the crack and clear your head. Roy is a twat. He is in over his head at Liverpool, something he is to proud to admit. He needs to go, like yesterday…

      • WLondonRed says:

Kopthismate, I agree with your sentiments but I don’t thnk he is too proud, I think he is enjoying his destruction of LFC in secret after match drinks with the monster at OT

        • Karim says:

Im from London but would quite happily give up my 1st class train ticket on sunday if it meant Roy was taking my place on the train after quitting as liverpool fc manager! Im not saying ill stay in liverpool to manage the team but i reckon i could do a damn sight better than he has done!
Why oh why is Lucas anywhere near the 1st team.

          Id play 4-4-2

          Reina
          Kelly
          Agger
          Skrtel
          Carragher
          Meirales
          Gerrard
          Johnson
          Cole
          Babel
          Torres

  • get unai emrey young talented and a complete unknown out side spain and his mums house oh and brans nans get real you might as well put aldo in charge

    • Bran says:

seem like you are really clueless about La Liga. Putting you in charge would be a better choice right..

  • gaga says:

no thanks to him, over rated 🙂 frankie be bad for us i believe

  • wilson says:

If 2 La liga titles and CL does not make you a good manager,i dont know what will.Frank probably strugled at Gala due to language difficulties. He would be a vast improvement on clueless Roy.14 games under Roy would seem like an eternity cos the football is dire.

  • A FINNIGAN says:

dalglish and thommo know the club inside out ,OUT were roy TURKEYNECK hodgson should be! royston hodgson get out ov ar club

  • Kenny says:

What ever new manager comes in he needs to scrap the pathetic youth system as it is producing nothing for the first-team and scrap the reserve team also and sack Borrell and Macmahon as they are clueless.

    • elninogreen08 says:

poor post, no basis for this at all there is plenty of young talent waiting to come through they just need to be nurtured properly we need to do what the arsenal and barca do with their youths!!!

  • George says:

King Kenny for the job!! We will get relegated with Rijkaard!
If Rijkaard is any good, why he is sacked by Galatasaray?!!
    Galatasaray not LiverpoolFC!!!

    King Kenny for the job!!!!

  • Simon says:

I’d rather keep Roy- He’s a world beater! He even won the league in Scandinavia. 🙂

  • Gareth W says:

Im not sure about Rijkaard, yes he enjoyed success at Barcalona but as mentioned he did have a big budget to work with and Ten Cate who was his assistant during his successful years is rumoured to be the brains behind those successes as after he left so did the success? Maybe it was a coincidence but maybe not?
Dalglish would definatly get the most out of the players, he has been out of the managerial game for a long while though, and this doesnt mean he wont be able to adapt but his success as a manager seems a long time ago now but i would welcome the appointment.
However,if we could get Gus Hiddink he would be my first choice, i think he is a fantasic manager with a great record and some premier league experience which means he could hit the ground running, which in our current predicament might be exactly what we need. He has also worked with a number of the top footballers in the world which helps when attracting players to the club.

    • C Stars says:

For those who point to Rijkaard’s unsuccessful stint as Galatasary manager should also remember Hiddink’s poor spell as Fenerbache manager! Hiddink was sacked after just a year in charge.

A bad managerial spell doesn’t change Rijkaard’s pedigree but it does sow some doubt. If he has any steel then he would be even more motivated to prove he is a top class manager at a footballing institution like Barcelona to prove he can do it again. Liverpool is that club.

As for managerial partnerships, it is not a surprise for a number 2 to be important. See Brian Clough and Peter Taylor or Carlos Queiroz’s influence on Ferguson’s transition to 451/433 in Europe. It is about patience, resources, the right man and the right team. Are we going to deny the influence David Dein had? He found Wenger, recruited players and negotiated contracts.

If we recruit Rijkaard, we should look to recruit the right team as well. A manager needing help some? Not a weakness. Look at Rafa when Pako left. Everyone needs a good number 2 and right team around him!

  • LFCDIEARD says:

couldn’t agree more to this article FR isn’t that great a manager he just made sound purchases at the time in barcelona that’s it!!!

  • chillpill says:

Why not bring in Gus and kenny as assitant. Kenny has been out of the game for a long while, being number 2 would be a great way back into managment and having a manager like gus in would be great, I’m sure kenny would take it if offered. What a management team that would be.

  • George says:

For those who like to criticize RAFA, remeber Harry Ridnappe is one of Rafa”s vocal critics and he got a good lesson in football tonight!!!
You should Thank your God that you are not Spurs fan tonight!!!!!LOL!
Rafa will go on and manage Real Madrid after Inter Milan. We are underestimating King Kenny now!
We may not deserve great managers like King Kenny and Rafa, we better work with RH,Souey, and Evans!!

  • Jay Wright says:

it’s funny that you have a word of caution about the money that Riijkaard spent in building that Barcelona team, while Pelligrini continues to be touted for his record breaking performance with the new Galactico’s (that won nothing and played a pretty uninspiring brand of football)

  • growler says:

Kenny, you must be a manc.

Rafa did many things people did not like, but bringing in the architect of the barca youth system and removing the previous youth regime was the highlight. he removed a youth system that had last brought through Gerrard and replaced it with the one that brought through the likes of iniesta, cesc, etc. at Barca.

He also has brought in the most exciting group of youngsters for a while (despite Roy’s attempt to sell some like Laurie Dalla Valle to bring his old mates like Konchesky). See Suso, ecclestone, Ngoo, Ayala, Insua (arrived as an 18 year old, left an international, because Roy wanted his mate in) and many others.

  • yes no matter what FRANK is the man that can take us out from this position we found our self now because he is much experience as the likes of morinho,so i strongly believe that with no doubt he will bring us back if given the job and he will bring in quality players to the club, pls i want all this information to pass it to the the new owner for him to sack roy and get (FRANK)before other club goes after him.thanks.

  • Matty K says:

Will not know what Roy is like till the players start performing. Maybe these yank managers we just punted bought more disharmony & negativity than we will ever realise. Transfer windows add 3 class players – current players lift & we are back in business.
