Time for these FOUR players to step out of Torres’s shadow

|

Every now and then when Kuyt looks sharp, some fans call for him to be played as a striker again, but again every now and then he shows that he isn’t clinical enough in front of goal. I’m on the fence about Kuyt playing as the leading striker, with his lack of pace also being a problem in games where we want to play balls in behind defences.

The last two candidates are both blessed with plenty of pace but doubts remain over the both of them for different reasons. Apart from his cool finish against Trabzonspor in the Europa League, Ryan Babel has shown himself to be lacking in the art of being a striker. He consistently shows poor movement and communication and therefore ends up becoming a passenger in matches rather than the explosive Dutchman we were all hoping for when he signed.

As for Milan Jovanovic, it’s early days as he’s still in the process of settling into life at Anfield. His displays at left midfield have been unspectacular to say the least but as we know, it is way too early to make a judgement on the Serb. On the plus side he did look exciting at the World Cup at times, and he had a record of almost one goal in every two games for Standard Liege. But, his impressive goalscoring tally came from playing upfront, something which he hasn’t been able to do much since arriving here. I believe that him and Ryan Babel should be swapped position-wise. In one of his first interviews with us, Jovanovic stated that his preferred position was on the left-wing; meanwhile we’ve all heard Ryan Babel’s claims that he’s naturally a striker. From what I have seen of the pair though, Babel looks much more effective playing out wide while Jovanovic looks to have more of the tools to be a decent striker (his goal against Northampton gave a glimpse of his finishing ability).

Out of these four possible candidates I would like to see Milan Jovanovic being played in Fernando Torres’ position whenever the Spaniard is unavailable. It has recently been suggested by some pundits and fans and I have to say I totally agree. He’s not too inexperienced like David Ngog, he’s not lacking in pace like Dirk Kuyt and he definitely seems to be a more intelligent player than Ryan Babel. Another positive about playing Jovanovic is that he holds the element of surprise still. Teams currently won’t know what to expect from the Serb and he could yet turn out to be a major hit if he settles in well and produces the kind of performances up front that earned him his transfer here.

If we can give Voronin a chance certainly we can give Jova a chance! Play him Roy and see how it goes. It can not be worse than what we have seen, can it?

THIS IS WHAT I POSTED TO SOMEONE ELSE, YOU SHOULD READ AND SEE WHY 4231 IS THE BEST OPTION, AND SOME OF THE REASONS WHY HODGSONS TACTICS ARE NOT WORKING

I disagree; Mereiles should be played with Lucas behind Gerrard in a 4-2-3-1. It’s clear to anyone with football knowledge that gerrard is tactically inept and often vacates his position to the detriment of the team. He is guilty of too many Hollywood balls often giving away possession. He would be better utilised in the hole in a free role, because he just doesn’t have any game intelligence. I include Lucas because everyone can now see he‘s a better option than Poulson, and with Mereiles that is a more fluid line up.

Now with regards to Johnson, I think you’re harsh in your assumption he’s rubbish. Johnson will not perform until we have a more mobile centre half beside him. That would mean removing Carragher and replacing him with Skyrtl which will allow the team to push higher up the field helping Johnson when he’s attacking. We play to deep because Carraghers lack of pace, and Johnson is often caught out because the defensive line is always too far behind the play.

So I would play Johnson, Skyrtl, Agger and Aurelio (hopefully when fit) at the back with Mereiles and Lucas in the midfield with Gerrard in front just behind Torres. Out wide I would play Cole and Kuyt. This I believe is a good enough team to get us out of trouble we’re in, if they are given the right instruction to press high up the field and not give the opposition any space.

The players you mention, should they be transfer listed you would probably be surprised by the teams that would come in for them. It’s not the players it’s the tactical instruction they receive from the manager.

Therefore this is Roy fault completely.

    LOL

YOUR REASONS FOR NOT USING 4-2-3-1 IS BASED ONLY ON THE FACT THE STRIKER, WHOEVER HE MAYBE GETS LONELY.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU GIVE THAT TACTICAL SPEECH AT ANFIELD.
