Why are we constantly linked with these sort of players?

|

With new owners arriving at Liverpool only last week, and with promises of substantial transfer budgets being made available, there is already a significant amount of talk being focused upon who Hodgson, or whoever may be in charge come January 1st, will attempt to bring in as additions to the Liverpool squad. Since the arrival of our previous American owners, and it gives me great delight to now be able to brand them as ex-owners, the club and the manager in charge has often had to work with a sell-to-buy based budget meaning only players can be brought in once other members of the squad were moved on. However, we are now hoping that is no longer the case.

It is widely expected that New England Sports Ventures will provide the club with a considerable transfer budget for the January transfer window and, with Liverpool starting their season in such disastrous fashion, it is evident that new blood is needed to freshen up a Liverpool squad in need of results and positive performances. With that in mind, the calibre of some of the players recently linked with the Reds ceases to provide me with almighty faith that any potential new players that may be brought in during the transfer window will improve on the current crop of under-performing ‘stars’ at Hodgson’s disposal.

Currently, Liverpool are being linked with such players as Wigan Athletic midfielder Charles N’Zogbia, Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente and Zenit St Petersburg’s Russian striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov, to name a few. For me, these sort of players are not of a high standard and certainly would not improve on what we already have and now, with a competitive budget to spend, the club need to target impressive, big-name players as we have spent the best part of the past 3 seasons picking up players with a lot to prove and with not a great deal of pedigree and, ultimately, it has left us languishing in the Premier League relegation zone. It is seemingly now up for questioning whether Roy Hodgson will be around come January however, one thing is for sure, whoever it as the helm at Anfield, needs to be targeting top-class individuals and utilising a transfer budget to improve a squad that, without a doubt, needs re-investment in order for the club to start climbing the table and getting the results that will allow us to finally compete at an acceptable level for the club and the fans.
