Lawrenson: “I can’t really see it happening I admit but . . .”

|

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes the Reds should just have a go against Tottenham Hotspur next weekend as they have no fear or relegation or real hopes of getting into the top four. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:

“I can’t really see it happening I admit – but I really hope Liverpool go for it against Spurs on Saturday. The home side will be coming off the back of a Wednesday Champions League game and they haven’t fared too well with that this season. I genuinely believe that if you’ve just won 3-0 as Liverpool did against West Ham on Saturday, you have to try and build on that momentum. The opposition might be of a higher standard but defensively, Spurs have looked extremely vulnerable this season. Assou-Ekotto, Kaboul, Hutton – come on, you can comfortably get at therm. The thing is, I think it’s pointless turning up at 0-0 and trying to hang on to it and maybe nick a winner. Liverpool won’t get relegated and they won’t finish in the top four – so why not have a go?”

Liverpool take on Spurs in the 4 o’clock kick off next Sunday.

Okay but why are you writing off our hopes of finishing in the top four? We’re not even half way through the season and 6 points off fourth place…so why are you so pessimistic? Our squad is more than capable of finishing in the top four and with one or two quality additions in January I think we have a real chance. Against Spurs, we really have to take the game to them and not just sit back and defend hoping to get a draw. They have quality players in attack but I agree that their defence is pretty weak with the likes of Ekotto, Kaboul and Hutton. We should apply more pressure further up the field and put them on the back foot right from the first minute. In all honesty, I’m pretty confident that we can get a result there.

He’s pessimistic because he figures Hodgson will remain the manager for the rest of the season.

If that’s the case, I’d all but write off our chances of top four too. It’s evident that we can’t really hope to achieve anything until Hodgson is replaced.

  • kenny says:

Liverpool should play Carragher at rightback and Johnson on the rightwing to doubleteam Bale and also to stretch Spurs defence. We should play Soto to cope with Spurs aerial threat. We should play Kuyt with Torres up front and push up as much as possible and play an offside trap.

  • peter says:

bang on kenny second name daglish by any chance i have been saying play gj right wing for a while now like spurs have done with bale because hand on heart he cant defend

  • Red Sky says:

Like that Kenny..we’ve been saying that for a while now. Look at the difference Kyut made against Chelsea when he played up with Torres. As for Mr.Lawrenson, you should really think about what you say before saying it. You once wore the Red of this great club.

I agree with kenny i would like to see us line up like this reina-carragher-skrtel-krygiakos-konchesky-johnson-lucas-meireles-cole-kuyt-torres

I really want to believe we have the squad to end in the top 4, which up until last season we’ve consistently achieved since ’03/’04. However, I really don’t know. At the end of the ’08/’09 season there was speculation we could lose both Alonso and Mascherano. As soon as I realised that at least one would be on their way that summer, I started to work on their respective pros and cons. The problem was it’s impossible to weigh up the value of each to the team as both were vital to our position as a top 4 club. Now that both have gone, who has come in to replace either’s role of value to our team?…So far, no one!

It scares me as I believe we’re weaker for the reason we have less vital team members that the other squad members can look at and know and feel comfortable their playing alongside some of the best players in their respective positions in the league. In ’08/’09, our best ever Premier League season, we also had Hyppia. Our ex captain who still was able to help provide strong leadership on the field and is considered up there as one of our great centre backs. Missing all these and replacing them with perhaps 2 players that have the potential to emualate them (Cole and Johnson) isn’t enough.

Unless the new people in charge understand that we need to bring in some TOP QUALITY a.s.a.p. I really can’t say we’ve got a squad good enough to last the distance pipping Man City or Spurs to 4th.

Whether you agree with Lawrenson or not one thing is for certain, we’re going to learn a hell of a lot more about last season when this season ends.

  • Scottie. says:

Best time to play Tottenham, they have struggled a bit after Champs league matches. We have a great chance of knocking them off if we play an attacking brand. id like to see Ngog n Torres up front wit kuyt and maxi out wide.

  • Shane o Driscoll (dublin) says:

Hey Mark, Spurs arent all that at all, just cause bale playin well dont mean your not beatable, yere well beat able and we have a great chance of finnishing in top 4 this season so dont bother writing us of for it ok

  • Jay says:

We will turn you over easily, you should not come and attack us, we beat teams that do that, you have to hope you knick a goal.

Let me tell you Ekotto is a very good left back much much better than Konchesky you guys have really got to watch the full match and watch him.

Kaboul is a beast of a centre half, our only weak link is RB similar to your problem Hutton can attack but not defend, but Liverpool have no wingers so its kinda irrelavent to be honest.

I can only see one winner I think modric, vdvaart, bale, lennon, and defoe will just be too much for you lot, unless you stick every man behind the ball which lets face it thats exactly what your gonna do

  • paul bishop says:

we will know if were gud enuff after sun spurs av lost 2 worse teams bk of a champions league match but still will always thnk that hodgson is not gud enuff 2 take us 4ward i know we won 3-0 but a sun foootball team cud of beat westham last wk they were that poor

  • Jay says:

paul bishop, you forget that we are at home and your still Liverpool we will up our game, the west hams and boltons we took for granted its our major downfall, but Liverpool is still a huge game for us, Van Der Vaart was rested and I dont know how your going to deal with him and bale, you dont have the players to keep them quiet

  • Karim says:

we should have a go every game, not just against spurs but every single team, home and away, i dont see why tactics change, if we play the way we know how, we will win more games than we lose.

  • Jay Wright says:

We are vulnerable at the back and THAT is the major reason that we need to take the focus away from our own defence and keep the ball away from our backline as much as possible. Utilising the same setup that we have seen so far makes it more difficult to hold onto the ball in the final third/relieve any pressure with more direct play, and so we should also be switching that around.

    433 – Reina/Johnson-Kyrgiakos-Carragher-Konchesky/Meireles-Poulsen-Lucas/Babel-Torres-Jovanovich

I don’t buy into all this stuff about gearing our whole team to stop Bale. Give Tottenham something to think about and force Bale & BAE to worry about defending also, instead of giving them free reign to just focus on attacking for the whole game.
