TWO Much Maligned Figures Who Proved Their Worth Yesterday

|

I have to admit, that like many other supporters, I haven’t always been that complimentary in the past to Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt and Lucas Leiva. I haven’t gone out as far to ridicule them and denounce them as hopeless players as some Reds fans have, but I have stated that both would need to improve if Liverpool were going to have a top class team. I have certainly sung Dirk’s praises more than Lucas’s though, but the Brazilian’s performance against Chelsea yesterday demonstrated that the 23 year old is developing into a top class player. A 4 minute demonstration of which is shown below:

Some Reds fans have been stating that he has been playing like this for the last 18 months, but I would have to disagree with this belief, although during the same time, he has certainly gradually progressed as a player. I have stated that Lucas needed a great deal of improvement in some areas of his game, and since the start of the season especially, it has been noticeable that aspects of his game have grown beyond recognition since he joined the club back in 2007. Against Chelsea, two fundamental aspects of his game stood out: his ability to intercept opposition attacks and his passing accuracy.

TOP TEN LIVERPOOL MOMENTS OF THE DECADE

As we come closer to the end of 2010, I thought it might be good to look back at the last decade and see all the memorable moments Liverpool have had during that time. Of course, the most immediate memory is the Champions League final in 2005, but there are also individual memories such as Gerrard’s goals against Olympiakos in 2005 on the way to the “Miracle in Istanbul,” and the “Gerrard final” of 2006 where Stevie dragged the team to win the FA Cup. Also I have shared memories of instances that occurred under Gerard Houllier’s tenure such as the Golden Goal winner in the UEFA Cup final in 2001, Gary McAllister’s injury time free kick in the Merseyside Derby and John Arne Riise’s goal against Manchester United that nearly broke the goal post in two.

Best game for lucas in a liverpool. I always supported him whn othrs didnt. Bt yesterday he proved he is worthy mre thn 5mil. Hope 2 see roy 2 stick with th same mids fr th games 2 cme, bt do change th wings quite often.

  • SNERKI says:

Lucas was extremely lucky that Essien was not playing yesterday. Kuyt played well for once but as usual failed to score from an easy attempt. I guarantee that Lucas and Kuyt will be outstandingly useless when we fail to beat Wigan and Stoke. However, the player who will surpass both of these two and the rest of the team in MEDIOCRITY against Wigan and Stoke will be Torres. The real Torres will resurface again that is the sulky and can’t hit a barn door primadonna. Torres has never been any good away from home and will be a sick joke again against Wigan and Stoke. Torres two goals yesterday were flukes. Reminder to all Torres’s groupies that his paltry 4 goals this season have all come at Anfield. Face it Liverpool fans despite the flukey win yesterday against Chelsea’s B-team we are going to get relegated and it is all Rafa’s fault. He signed rubbish players like Torres.

    • red2death says:

Interesting opinions. If those were flukes, I guess to have Torres’ scoring record, he must be Irish.

Form is temporary, luck is permanent.

    • snerki's nemesis says:

You need to take a chill-pill. We were recently in the relegation zone and were given no chance of beating Chelsea by all the “learned” pundits. To go and beat them 2-0 is a huge win. I’ll celebrate the win and move on. Life still goes on.

      • Hugh Jass says:

How the he’ll can you call Torres rubbish? He went through a lean patch. Show me one player that hasn’t.

    • dee says:

If torres is a rubbish player then who could d good player be? Probably u’re from planet ZIGOG

    • David says:

      your and idiot

    • Eric says:

Hi Snerki, or whatever you call yourself, I really doubt you know much about football. Lucas had a fantastic game yesterday and Torres was world class. If you think players like Torres, Kuyt and Lucas are rubbish then I really advise you to get your head checked.

    • Cal says:

‘we are going to get relegated’??? who are we? there is no ‘we’ between u and us. stop pretending u are one of us, you are pathetic.

  • pf says:

SNERKI, why use we when you’re clearly a disgruntled Chelsea fan!!! Chelsea’s b-team?? how much did that team cost?? we were missing players too — with Martin Kelly making his premier league debut!! at least you knew about your injuries way in advance we had to make changes that day!!
Lucas was great and he has been good for a year or so — but is an easy scapegoat!! If he gave the ball away as much as Spearing did against Napoli he would have been killed in the press and forums!!

  • Greg says:

At the start of the season the club brought in Poulsen and Meireles as new central midfielders, but Roy has gradually realised that Lucas deserves his place ahead of both, the way he’s playing at the moment! Well done Lucas, keep it up.

  • SNERKI says:

In response to pf at 7.36pm stating that I snerki am a Chelsea fan you are wrong. I have been a Liverpool fan since the FA Cup final defeat to Man Utd in May 1977. I have seen the great Liverpool teams and players in action-but not one of the current squad would get into the all-time best Liverpool eleven and you are clearly A BLERN.

  • neil says:

snerki you are full of it!!
good performance by lucas, worthy of a place in tottenham or villas squad maybe but still no star quality in my opinion, no defence splitting passes or alonsoesque long through balls. i would still give him until the end of the season and see how he gets on.
we should have kept danny guthrie in the first place and saved 6mil, hes just as good as lucas

    • David says:

Dani Guthrie is not half the player Lucas is, he cant even get in Newcastle’s best team. I used to hate Lucas and for example in the 2008/2009 season when we came second we would of won the league if he didn’t play. Having said that, this season he has been one of the best midfield players in the league he hasn’t put a foot wrong. I think we should all give Lucas all our support because if I were him I would leave Liverpool as all the fans are so brutal towards him

  • SNERKI says:

In response to Neil at 8.29pm any so called fan who thinks Lucas is worth keeping for the rest of this season is seriously deluded. He was up against a wing-back(Zhirkov) and a waste of space (Ramires) and the invisible man (Mikel) yesterday. These 3 are hardly formidable. Ramires may have cost 18 million but as we know from so many of Rafa’s signings this doesn’t mean that you get a quality player for example Aquilani. Aquilani is fine in the snail’s pace league that is Serie A. We should sell Lucas in January to Rafa.

    • vjm says:

Why u didnt noticed ramires and mikel was lucas continuosly dispossesing them. Cheal team is known for physical and he gave them the same dose.
I am not a fan of lukas but we have to give him credit for what he has done on sunday and he is still 23. we can see he has improved from last season. On sunday he has done his job perfectly as a holding mid player.

  • turks says:

lucas has the makings of a great player, have supported him from day1!!
no point in replying to those with a clear lack of football knowledge, best player on the park today imo and has been in a good few matches last season.

  • CB says:

How can anyone respond to this Snarky guy is beyond me… Trolling anyone?

  • daboy says:

Snerki you are a disgrace to call yourself a football fan let alone a Liverpool fan your opinions stink, and Gerard would easily make a Liverpool best all time 11.

  • Aayush Sood says:

ok…so they did prove their worth..
bt wt hppns afgtr january??..wre will they go whn new players come in..will b sold i guess..

  • Pranav says:

I have always liked kuyt. People fail to notice his intelligent link up play. plus he is a workhorse.
As for lucas, yeah he was excellent in the chelsea game. Kudos to him, but he was so against manu too at anfield. Unless he can produce the same against weeker teams and consistently he would still be under scrutiny.
And just wishing agger to get well soon.YNWA!

  • Udoh friday says:

If u cal torres rubbish player den u must b an IDIOT.u ar been unfair to him.tel hw many team hav scord 2goals against chelsea dis season witout concedin a goal.am very sure u ar not a livpool fan!

  • samuel charles says:

    FUNNY THAT SKY SPORTS AND NEARLY EVERY OTHER MEDIA ANTI LIVERPOOL SITE did not notice the following;

1, that liverpools plan where ripped up just 1 and half before kick off, when soto and johnson pulled out?
2, joe cole sitting in the stands.
    3, no agger,
4 no aurelio who when fit is far better then konchesky.
5, kuyt only playing his first game in two months with hardly any match fitness?
6, torres still not 100% and yet made terry that over rated english darling of the newspapars what he is slow and one footed?

shall i go on, and buy the way we have beaten cheslea with essien and lampard and drogba before

tell me ! what the fcuk did old timer drogba do when brought on !

no one mentions that chelsea paid nearly 19 mill for that waste of space Zhirkov add that to another wate of cash which never gets higlighted in the media drival that this country puts out!

if you pay 18 mill for the crap Ramires then paying 20 million for aquilani looks ok.

its one rule for liverpool and loads of rules that can change and be made up for the benefit for the big spending clubs like villa, spurs and city and chelsea, to think liverpool have spent money, WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP

  • Red4Life says:

Im going to hold my hand up and apologise !!

A few weeks back when things were bad I said i could not see where our next set of points were going to come from as we had Bolton, Blackburn and Chelsea in the next 3 games after the way we were playing.

Now 2 weeks later we have pulled out 9 points from those 3 games.

Sorry for the critisism and Well done to the lads and well done Roy, can we have more of the same for the rest of the season please.
