My TOP FIVE Liverpool January Transfer Targets

|

With the January window upon us, I thought I might offer up some transfer targets that Liverpool could look at. Some are more realistic than others with a couple probably more at home in a fantasy football eleven. Of course all depends on what John W Henry and the Fenway Sports Group decide to give the Liverpool manager in January:

1) Eden Hazard – An attacking midfielder who has the creativity to frighten any opposition defence, the young Belgian international is being chased by a number of Europe’s top clubs. At 19, he would surely fit the bill of young and talented which the new American owners are looking for and for this reason I would put him as a more realistic transfer target if Henry & Co are willing to fork out £15million. A stumbling block may well be that he has stated recently his admiration for Arsenal but the Reds could have a trump card by being able to offer him first team football with less competition for places.

2) Ashley Young – Another more realistic transfer target as the Aston Villa star has yet to sign a new contract which runs out within a year and a half. With the Reds desperately looking for a winger to give the team some much needed pace and width, Young is both still young and home-grown. A big issue will be the competition that Liverpool could face for his signature as teams such as Spurs could offer Young a different option.

3) Fernando Llorente – Definitely by far and away the most unrealistic option on the list. The asking price of over £30million would probably rule us out and leave only Real Madrid or Manchester City with a realistic chance of buying him. I have offered him up as forward option though as I would like to have a similar style of player up front to Llorente. A target man who is strong and powerful in the air as well as capable with the ball at his feet, he would be a very good foil for Fernando Torres. What other strikers could be said to be similar? Mario Gomez was touted but he now has a first team place at Bayern, but one option I would not like to see is Carlton Cole.

4) Fabio Coentrao – Considering our travails at left back with Paul Konchesky, I’m offering up Coentrao as the ideal candidate although I feel he is an unlikely purchase at best. We need somebody who is equally adept at the back as they are going forward and there are not many left backs in world football that live up to the billing. All the other options on the table would be equally as expensive as Coentrao so I am uncertain as to who else would be a good purchase.

5) Yann M’Vila – Damien Comolli is likely to sign at least one player from France in January, and M’Vila would seem to be the most likely candidate for a couple of reasons. With Christian Poulsen touted to leave in January, Roy Hodgson will need to have another defensive midfielder and 20 year old French international M’Vila would tick all the boxes for being young, quick and an able tackler.

Good list of January transfer targets and most of them are quite realistic although Coentrao may be too expensive. Both Hazard and Ashley Young would cost up to 15 mil but both are worth it. Fernando Llorente would be a fantastic signing and a world class striker has to be the priority in January. Llorente, Suarez and Carroll are my preferred choices in the forward position. I would personally like to add N’Zogbia, Eljero Elia and Taye Taiwo to that list.

  • kenny says:

Sell Torres for 50 million to City and use the money to buy Edin Dzeko for 35million (He won’t go to Man City as everyone knows they will never win the League or Champions League) and Andy Carroll for 15 million. Do not waste money on another leftback, instead put Mavinga in at leftback. Forget Ashley Young, he cuts infield too often, put Glen Johnson rightwing and buy Nzogbia for the leftwing. Mvila is not big enough to be a quality ballwinner, we need a guy with the same physique as Yaya Toure. Eden Hazard is too lightweight for the Premier League.

    • True blue says:

      @ kenny……………You’re a scouse dope actually

    • Meireles says:

“Mvila is not big enough to be a quality ballwinner, we need a guy with the same physique as Yaya Toure”

How big was Monster Mascherano? Its not about the physique…reading of the game & timing are more important..

  • Top 5 signings for liverpool according to me..

    2. Ashley young- good winger..
    3. Elia- good & young attacking winger
    4. Hazard- young talented midfielder
    5. Taiwo- good left back..

Good list: But i Honestly think feel we need 7 players in this January and 7 players Out to get back to challenging at the top consistantly season after season:

    Outs should be :

    1:Krygiakos CB 2:INSUA LB 3:POULSEN DM/CM

    4:JOVANOVIC LW/RW 5:J Cole RW/AM/LW

    6:M Rodriguez AM/LW/RW 7:Babel LW/RW/FD

    8: Aquilani CM/AM?

    INS:

1: RB : Micah Richards Of Man City to compete with G Johnson and keep him on his toes.

2: CB: G Cahill Of Bolton, B Hangeland Of Fulham, D Wheater of Mboro, R Shawcross Of Stoke Or S Taylor Of Newcastle: One of these should be brought in to compete with Carragher and Skrtel to play ALONGSIDE AGGER at the back.

3:DM: M’Villa of Rennes, Momo Sissoko Of Juventus Or Lassana Diarra Of Real Madrid should be brought to club as soon as possible to fill hole Mascherano has left.

4:RW: E Hazard Of Lille, A Turan of Galatassary, A Young Of Aston Villa, J Navas Of Seville, J Mata Of Valencia or A Sanchez Of Udinese, one of these should be brought in to play as out and out right winger at club.

5:LW: Royston Drenthe Of Real Madrid, Diego Capel Of Seville or Albert Crusat Of Almeira should be brought to club to be our out and out LEFT footed, left winger.

6:AM: Valbuena Of Marseille, should be brought in if Aquilani is sold, he is tricky, skillful, quality, creative player, quick, nippy, mobile player in Modric, Van der Vaart, Nasri type player who would unlock teams all the time with his touch, skill, vision and class.

7: FD: Llorente Of Athletico Bilbao, Dzeko Of Wolfsburg or Peter Crouch Of Tottenham should be brought to club, as big target man Torres can feed of is needed at club.

  • richard says:

    1) Adebayor

    4) Ruiz
    5) Pablo

  • Come on ... says:

Come on … People wake up.
    Roy is still our there.
Do u think roy even knows these players in the list (except hazard, cole) he would bring charlton cole and some english player, while conomile wil bring one of his french players.
Unless Roy leaves Liverpool is in big trouble.

  • True blue says:

    @kenny…………..you’re a dope

  • Dave says:

I expect Carlton Cole and Danny Murphy

  • steve mcauley says:

like to have 1-4, great players who would be a vast improvement on what we have. have to confess i haven’t seen anything of m’vila so i can’t judge however, i don’t think we will pay the necessary readies to buy ANY of these players

  • stah howard says:

roy hodgson says he will not spend the owners money on sub standard players ? no he never said again.

  • kenny says:

In response to True Blue, elaborate on your point.

  • philip says:

I don’t want to pour the cold water to all the Liverpool’s fans. I don’t think we got the budget to buy all these players that mentioned. Furthermore, i dont think those players wanted to come or joined Liverpool. Let’s face it, Liverpool are not the same old team like 70″s. Not good & quality player want to join them now. Trust me…I am Liverpool fan also. So, let face the reality…utilize the youngster. Forget about getting trophies or Champion League. Rebuild the New Liverpool is more realistic. Forget about the past, look to the future. We are already far behind the likes of ManU, Chealsea, Arsenal & now newcomers like Tottenham & Man City. When are we gonna learned?

  • kenny says:

In response to Meireles the last trophies Liverpool won were with Hamann in 2005 and Sissoko or Hamann in 2006. Both of these guys were 6 foot 3 inches in height. Mascherano is 5 foot 8 inches, the number of trophies won with him as ballwinner was zero.

    • Eric says:

The number of trophies we won with Mascherano was zero but I think every football fan knows that he’s one of the best defensive midfielders in the game right now. He might not have won us anything but he helped us to the Champions League Final and second in the Premier League. To further my point and to agree with the guy who calls himself “Meireles”, you don’t have to be 6 foot 3 inches in height to be a a good defensive midfielder. You just have to look at the likes of Makelele, Essien and Cambiasso to see what I mean.

  • kenny says:

Liverpool fans would want to realise that NESV are not going to give Hodgson money to spend in January as they did not appoint him and see that he has already wasted 23.5 million already. If Hodgson wants to strengthen in January he will have to sell certain players to raise the money and also to stop the wage bill getting bigger. The fourth highest wage bill in the Premier League but yet the club finds itself in midtable, players like Cole, Torres, Reina, Kuyt, Carragher and Gerrard should be ashamed of themselves. Players like these are not shown any committment to the club but continually moan about the club’s lack of investment in the squad and yet they ignore how much the club is paying them each week.

  • daboy says:

I do not think they will have the money for all these players unless Torres and some high wage earners are sold.
My list goes Drenthe Mvila Cazorla as he can play either side Albrighton Shawcross and Krkic these would still cost a mint but thats what i would like to see.
Apart from Cazorla all are under 25 and could still be there in years to come.

  • Julie says:

I can understand J.COLE but TORRES, REINA, KUYT, CARRAGHER & GERRARD are players that lack commitment and should be ashamed of themselves for what the club pays them??? ARE YOU SERIOUS? ARE YOU A REDS FAN? WHY DON’T YOU WRAP YOUR COMMENTS UP IN THAT BACHELORS DEGREE OF GARBOLOGY & TAKE IT BACK TO YOUR DADDY GEORGE ( GILLETT ) & UNCLE TOM, how proud they must be that their offspring is doing all he can to support the club they use to own!!! THE ONLY ONE WHO SHOULD BE ASHAMED IS YOU.

  • lee says:

    konchesky (out for 2 million)
    poulsen (out for 2 million)

liverpool wont get enough funds so investing in a strike parter for torres is more crucial
i would say get someone in the mould of heskey, crouch, zamora, carlton cole…someone who can hold up play and strong in the air

  • Lfc4Life says:

Julie – go easy it’s obvious that kenny has either had a couple or has missed placed his pills 😉

I think Roy is the most luckiest man ever!!
The postponed AWAY games would surely have tightened the rope around his neck and he would have been gone by now…..

Now we have a comfortable home banker in wolves and all will seem well for Roy and will not give NESV enough reason to fire him at this point.

    Now unless we lose to wolves I think Roy is with us untill the end of the season where we will finish 8th at best :{

  • kenny says:

In response to Julie and LFC4life, the league position doesn’t lie, players are not performing pure and simple, just as they did not last season under Rafa. Fans like Julie and LFC4life would want to wake up and stop being so gullible that the worldclass 5 goal a season Torres actually gives a damn. These guys are not earning their wages, even worldclass teams like Bolton and Sunderland are ahead of them in the League. Hicks and Gillette are gone now but so called fans like Julie would seem to want them back so she could blame the pathetic form of the players mentioned on the two Americans. In response to Eric, Hamann was a much better ballwinner than Mascherano. A guy as small as Mascherano isn’t much good to a team defending corners and freekicks.
