The first casualty of Comolli’s tenure?

|

Liverpool chief scout Eduardo Macia has left the club by mutual consent, according to the Daily Mail. Spaniard Macia had remained at Anfield despite the departure of Rafa Benitez but with the appointment of Damien Comolli as Director of Football Strategy, Macia was deemed surplus to requirements. Comolli is now seen as in charge of player recruitment, according to the Daily Mail, and will aim to buy at least four players in the January transfer window reports the paper. Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux was seen in the Director’s box at Anfield during Liverpool’s defeat to Wolves and is widely expected to be the Reds’ first signing in January.

  • Gazman says:

Who the heck is this Comolli chap? Why was he appointed so soon following the purchase of the club by FSG? Why was he appointed so soon yet the owners dither over the future of Hodgson who should have been shown the exit door after the Everton match? I believe Comolli will be a king-maker, who will greatly influence whether Hodgson stays or goes, but what has Comolli done to this point in his career to warrant such a powerful position? Why are no big questions such as these being asked about this bloke? Why would any big name manager come to LFC to share the decision making with Comolli in his position of head of football strategy? I don’t get it.

Very good point there Gazman. It makes one wonder what is going on.
    Smells very fishy!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Eric says:

I don’t believe in Technical Directors/Directors of Football Strategy but only if you have a competent manager. If you have a good manager, then he will take care of everything: team selection, training methods, transfers and everything else. A Director will largely undermine the work of the manager and once they disagree on footballing matters, the club will go wrong. The manager will have to rely on the Director to buy new players and he will have little say over transfers. In my opinion, the manager should be in charge of everything.

However, with Hodgson as manager, I’m more than happy with the appointment of Comolli cause that will mean the club will be smarter in the transfer market. Comolli will make sure we don’t bring in players like Jones, Konchesky and Poulsen. If you have a manager who doesn’t know what he’s doing, like Hodgson, then the club clearly needs a Director to help out.

I couldn’t agree more, the manager should be in charge of everything, regarding team matters, transfers, etc.

I also agree with you regarding Roy Hodgeson , a manager as clueless as him needs someone like Commolli breathing down his neck making decisions for him more or less. Just hope hes gone come Monday, if not i don’t see him at the club after the Utd FA Cup game unless we win……YNWA

  • swifty says:

Do u not ever read, hes the brains behind spurs signings up to 2008 including pav, modric lennon and bale! so hes earned his stripes plus he used to work at arsenal

  • Kaleem says:

If Commolli is really in pole position, he needs to get Roy fired before supporters start to target him too. Gazman raises some useful points and I hope we don’t end up with another manipulator like Purslow. His first test will be the new signings starting tomorrow. If we end up signing more rubbish like Carlton Cole, we don’t need an expensive director of football to comb Roy’s hair.

  • StephenR says:

Gazman the fact you don’t know who comoli sort of sums up the type of Liverpool you may well be. The type who probably thinks Lucas is still our worst player, who in fact has probably been our best for 2 seasons!

Comoli was in charge of recruitment at arsenal, diaby, song, flamini, fabregas, clichy to name a few,

He was also in charge at spurs, huddlestone, Dawson, bale, Lennon, modric, pavilyachenko,

Now tell me why he shouldn’t be there, poulsom and konchesky wouldn’t have been signed if he had have been,

  • kols of norway says:

comoli was the same at spurs when jol was there, comoli got jol sacked. and had a heavy hand in landing ramos as manager. we all know how well spurs played at that time. and he bought players for jol and ramos. some was great, but most where garbage, and worse than crap. in the end levy had to get rid of comoli and the director of fotball system.

  • kols of norway says:

ok, i could be wrong, but i have read somevhere on here that he didnt have anything to do with all those players at arsenal, exept clichy. and lennon, modric, hudd where already seen as great talents at the time, so it is not like he found some hidden gems all of the sudden.

  • kols of norway says:

and he got sacked at spurs, when ramos had to go.

  • I AM says:

this is all very worrying….gazman makes a good point about the owners dithering over Roy but bringing Commoli in so soon, like he also says Commoli is king-maker, so Roy is obviously toeing the line and doing as he`s told by Commoli…..the more I read about Commoli the less I`m liking it, he seems to have a bit of a reputation for been self serving and a bit of a trouble maker….why did Arsenal get rid?, he might have signed them players for spuds but it`s not like he unearthed them, and if he`s that good why was he working at St Etienne? Commoli was appointed by the owners cos he uses “sabre metrics” in evaluating potential players, something which our owners swear by and they use with their “red sox” in baseball……Essentially we still got owners that know f**k all about the game, after hearing that FSG has just spent hundreds of millions on baseball players the money better be forthcoming here too or serious questions will start be asked of the owners

  • Keith says:

Commolli also worked in the states, learning how baseball managers use statistical analysis to sign players, rather than their ‘reputation’.

Of course, there are basically no similarities between a stop-start ‘sport’ like baseball and football, so who knows whether or not this will work over here.

  • And Spurs only started moving in the right direction ONCE the so called Technical Director was removed and the decision making reverted back to the manager.Potential for back-stabbing conflicting opinions on players and 2 centre powers will always be used by players to the detriment of the club.Arsenal and Spurs weren’t particularly sorry to see him go.St.Ettiene the club that he just left was scathing about his power play schemming. This practice seems quite prevalent in Europe and basically means the president’s spy beckons. For now in LFC is welcome
    afterall we have ROY.YNWA

  • jonesey says:

Ian Holloway signed 4 players for Blackpool 2 days before the start of the season for a grand total of £2 million and they play great attacking foootball while we are mega borring to watch – does not take a French Guru to work that one out.

  • stn h says:

stange no leaks to the media about this useless manager by those who hounded out the last one – they know who they are – they would have houlier back and look what he’s done for villa.
ps rafa had to go but it was distasteful of those who leaked to the papers. strange the manager telling us he still has the players with him ? shouldnt it be the other way around, oh they are quiet arnt they !

  • Dogger says:

It’s obvious really folks. The owners knew Comolli and what he stood for. He works in a similar vein to NESV e.g. identifying young talents through statistical methods. They share a similar vision. Whilst not foolproof, it does minimise risk when it comes to buying players as you have additional data most clubs would not consider when buying players.
Now, as much as they know Comolli they will not know any managers and the ones Comolli could recommend either may not be available or easily available. Patience. Our time will come again, no matter how bad it seems.

  • Zahid says:

I think Deschamps n Commoli could work well since their both French well i think Comoli is anyways hes worked in France alot so they should have some similar understanding. So if Roy is sacked then we may get King Kenny n maybe Phil Thommo in until the end of season……YNWA

  • Philip says:

The 3 players that needs the chop desperately. Is Lucas. Kuyt. Koncheski And sack Roy. And sammy Lee to Save ouer season.

    • Eric says:

You either don’t watch any of Liverpool’s games or you have something personal against some players. Lucas has been our best and most consistent performer this year and Kuyt actually gives 100% every game and gives a damn about winning or losing.

    • george lfc says:

Roy is much better than Sammy Lee for god’s sake! Kuyt and Lucas are far better than Caragher ! You may not like them because they are not english. English players are just like english managers…….CRAP!

  • leli says:

as far as i am concerned we only have one player who is s gerard .the others need to be changed along with the manager .if this will not be done we will never succed

  • daboy says:

Why would you sack the chief scout his role is slightly different to Comolli’s or so i thought. Macia could have helped get some of the top talent in Spain the likes of Suso and Pacheco who i am assuming he dug up.

  • daboy says:

I think the appointment of Comolli was an excellent idea and showed that they are willing to spend to make sure football matters are attended to properly.
The way i see it the manager manages the side and asks for certain kinds of players this fellow recommends the best options.
Sounds like good business to me after all our recruiting needs to be fine tuned.
