The ONE Man who will decide Roy’s fate?

|

The second incident came in the aftermath of the Liverpool-Wolves match. The angry outburst of Roy Hodgson after the match weakend his position in the club dramatically and with the January transfer window nearly upon us, FSG will have to make a decision as to who they trust in the transfer market. They wouldn’t want to give money to a manager who could be gone in a few weeks, and so the only other option is to go and consult with the man tasked with the long term transfer strategy of the club, Damien Comolli. The presence of Sylvain Marveaux at Anfield is evidence enough that the transfer dealings are already taking place, perhaps under the agreement of Roy Hodgson, but not necessarily led by the manager. You have to ask yourself who knows more about Marveaux, Hodgson or Comolli? The answer is almost certainly the latter.

A “power grab” maybe a too strong a phrase but the situation is certainly to the Frenchman’s liking. He likes to be in control of transfers going by his previous position at Saint-Etienne but it doesn’t always lead to a positive outcome. Saint-Etienne co-chairman Bernard Caiazzo said after his departure:

“We are not crying into our handkerchiefs. You need some humility in football and Damien was convinced he was right 100 per cent of the time. There was never any question of dialogue. Damien enjoyed total power in his first year with us. His was the last word on all transfers and that is how he wanted it. The manager at the time, Alain Perrin, had not even seen some of the players he was given. Damien was his boss. His powers were much reduced in January after the failure of his transfer policy the previous summer – and he was not pleased.”

So why is Comolli being entrusted with so much at Liverpool now? The American owners still know next to nothing about the sport and Comolli is a friend of Billy Beane; a man John W Henry implicitly trusts with his judgement after his success with saber-metrics in Baseball. With Henry and Werner’s lack of knowledge then, they will trust Comolli to make many of the decisions for the foreseeable future. With Hodgson still on good terms with the Frenchman, the departure of Roy could still be some way off but Comolli is certainly the Kingmaker too if the club decide to remove the current manager.

I don’t believe in Technical Directors/Directors of Football Strategy but that’s only if you have a competent manager. If you have a good manager, then he will take care of everything: team selection, training methods, transfers and everything else. A Director will largely undermine the work of the manager and once they disagree on footballing matters, the club will go wrong. The manager will have to rely on the Director to buy new players and he will have little say over transfers. In my opinion, the manager should be in charge of everything.

However, with Hodgson as manager, I’m more than happy with the appointment of Comolli cause that will mean the club will be smarter in the transfer market and also less power for Hodgson. Comolli will make sure we don’t bring in players like Jones, Konchesky and Poulsen. If you have a manager who doesn’t know what he’s doing, like Hodgson, then the club clearly needs a Director to help oversee what he’s doing and help him out.

Comoli knows nothing about Liverpool FC. He has never worked for world class club like Milan, Barce, Juventus or Real Madrid.

Why should Liverpool’s future manager be chosen by this guy? It’s a big mistake. Look at the amount of poor players Comoli bought at Spurs. It’s as hit and miss as most managers buying players. So why is given such power at a club like Liverpool?

The managers position is sacred at Liverpool and while I’m all for bringing more of a structure into the club I don’t think the fans will take kindly to the managers role being diluted in any way.
