Would “Mourinho Mk II” be worth considering for Liverpool?

|

Andres Villas-Boas is not a name all Liverpool fans would have heard of but over the last year, he has emerged to become one of Europe’s most exciting young managers. At just 33, he is in his first season as Porto manager and has yet to lose in the league after 14 matches. It is not only his unbeaten record that has impressed many but the style of attractive, attacking football which has made him a much sought after manager. A style of manager: young, eager to prove himself and with an attacking philosophy which will endear him to many Reds fans. John W Henry and FSG are not adverse to giving young managers a chance; you only have to look at Theo Epstein at the Boston Red Sox to know they are not afraid at giving young people with little experience lead roles if they believe they have the talent to succeed.

Villas-Boas started his career in his teens, working in the Porto scouting department under Bobby Robson in the mid 90s. The club’s coaches were very impressed even then with Villas-Boas’ ability to write scouting reports that were succinct and easy to understand. At just 21, he was appointed Technical Director of the British Virgin Islands FA before taking charge of the national side for a few World Cup qualifying matches. At the turn of the millennium, he returned to Porto to become coach of the Under 19s side.

He just signed a new contract with porto today so he’s off the list.

  • Big Al says:

Next to Woy Mike Bassett would look good

  • Connor says:

Yes but we need a winner so may be best to wait till the end of the season. Dont get this contract crap, theyre not worth the paper theyre written on, if NESV want him they can get him.

    • Zahid says:

If NESV want Roy gone then they can get rid aswell but they don’t fearing they will have to pay him off 3 mill +

  • Jay says:

hmmm…interesting, if he wins the league with Porto, we should break the bank to get him.
    just my humble opinion.

  • kenny says:

Forget guys like this, put Phil Thompson in charge. He knows the club inside out. He knows how to organize a team. He wouldn’t put up with the sulking fits of the likes of Captain Invisible(Gerrard) and the most overrated striker in the world. All of these European candidates would come in and say they want another 250 million to spend like Rafa did.

  • JackAnty says:

He signed a 1 year contract extension, not a new contract. This could be speculated to have been done so that if he does leave the club will get more compensation. It could also be VB saying he’s not ready to move on. Either way, good for Porto. Would love to have him here.

  • ste says:

At this point ANY manager would be better! in fact we havent even got a Manager cos Woy cant actually ‘Manage!’

    Hodgson OUT!!!!!!!!!

  • Eric says:

Forget about this unknown guy, get Rafa back. He’s on holiday in Liverpool and unemployed and knows the club inside out. He’s worked with most players and staff before and will need no time adapting. He will motivate and get the best out of Stevie G and Torres. He will recall Insua and Aquilani to replace Konchesky and Poulsen. He will play attacking football and we’ll be right back at the top. Clearly he has unfinished business here. Get Rafa back.

    • Jay Wright says:

He knows the club inside out because he wanted to make the entire club all about him. Forget the ego maniac and move on. His business at Liverpool IS finished

      • danpool says:

spot on the football we played at the end of his reing was a joke and he let alonso go not the best move were also missing hypia he was class but at least we got jhonson and as cheap as 18 mill

      • craig says:

        well said i agree

    • Dee says:

Yes, benitez is an easy option but is he a good option? It’s better to give a new, young and enterprising manager a clean slate to start afresh.

    • richard says:

“right back at the top”, where did we finish last season under Rafa? He spent hundreds of millions, and only came close to the title once, and it was his fault we lost it with his lunatic ranting and sh#t stiring. And lets not forget that Torres best season was his first. Since then it appears that he has gotten steadily worse each season. Rafa can stay away. But we still need to get rid of woy.

  • chunky says:

This guy would be great but don’t hold your breath. NESV haven’t the sense to see beyond Hodgson.

  • PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO REMOVE ROY HODGSON AS MANAGER IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE CLUB – SPREAD THE WORD ON FANSITES, FORUMS, TWITTER, MYSPACE ETC ETC ETC BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE – TELL 10 FANS AND GET THEM TO TELL 10 MORE ETC AND WE WILL GET THIS THING GROWING http://www.petitiononline.com/hodgson/petition.html

  • B2D says:

I do not think it is right to blame NESV, if they came straight in and sacked Hodgson people would then say oh god more cowboys have bought the club. They have to assess and they wont be sitting there twiddling thumbs as some might suggest. Especialy as Football is not there forte.
Though the owners have to give time or your setting a precedent for future managers. And become like Man City in th nineties and early two thousands sacking managers way too soon.

I am hoping that they decide enough is enough they have atleast gave him a few months now and nothing as changed in either style, performance or entertainment (last one we desperately need) and sack him.
He was not the right man to get in the first place. Especially when really it was our away last season what let us down so why go for Hodgson who had a worse record away than Liverpool with Fulham.

  • Rick says:

    1) Joechim Loew
    2) Louis Van Gaal
    3) Claudio Ranieri
    4) Owen Coyle

These are the best Manager, in a long term view. They have a fantastic record with youngsters, and They all practice a good style.
The rest of Managers is a pile of s***e Who are only able to buy on expensive.

  • Keith says:

tbh i’d take hitler as manager if it meant getting shut of roy

  • Red2death says:

Villas-Boas would be a gamble. But a pretty exciting one at that.

Maybe he’ll bring us the title. Maybe he’ll flop. But whatever the case, it’ll be a good ride!

  • Fans in general are reluctant to give Dalglish the manager’s job. The reason for this is because of the fear of failure tarnishing Kenny’s longterm legendary status. Their is one perfect safeguard for this appoint Phil Thompson who is one of the greatest defensive organisers the game has ever seen as No.2 and all these fears will melt away. No-one can fight destiny, our last successful manager in the league was Dalglish. He has always said himself that he has unfinished business.

  • Dee says:

Andre villa boas for me is like josep gurdiola who is presently the youngest coach to have won the champios league after replacing the ‘almighty’ rijkaard @ barcelona. He is young and that fits into NESV plan, he plays attacking and entertaining football and that’s what the fans want. He is unbeaten both in the league and europa league and definitely better than ROY.

  • A says:

I Like the idea of Dalglish/Thompson
I like the idea of Boas

I have also heard that Klinsman was the instigator of bringing in all the young talent that is now flourishing in the German National team. I dont know if that is true, but if he brought in Oezil & Muller then he may be worth a gamble.

  • Livmad says:

Never bring back Rafa, coz we’ll be fighting only for the top four. Why do we always have to fight for top four? Roy need to go ASAP. Get this Boas…or Boss

  • Zahid says:

Kike Flores at Athletico is just as good as this guy if not better, he was being compared to Mourinho aswell a few months a go.

my list of suitable candidates in order:

    1) Hiddink (but he doesn’t want to come back to club football and is loyal to his Turkey job)

    2) Deschamps (but his teams still in the Champions League and will want until the summer minimum with Marseille before he decides)

    3) Reijkaard – hes out of work at the moment most suitable candidate at the moment.

    4)Martin O’Neil, Peligrini, Flores

  • hos says:

i say… it`s Al makhtoum curse on liverpool. get the sheikh as the owner and you`ll see the best result from their fortune.

    • Zahid says:

Lol if only we had him first time around before either of these yanks!

Even if he did sell us later on, atleast we would have had a great squad and a new stadium built or almost built by now, with plenty of investment into the club and regenerating the whole area around Stanley Park, just like what Sheikh Mansours doing around the City stadium
