For Me, It Was The Greatest Sight To See In The Derby

|

Martin Kelly was superb for me against Everton yesterday and it is great to see a young local lad making his way through the youth ranks and performing at the highest level. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was full of praise for Kelly’s performance after the match:

“I thought Kelly played really well. He played really well in the first two games and I thought he was excellent (against Everton). That is fantastic for us to see young boys starting to develop. If you get one like that it is not for us to take the credit, it is the people before us and it has been fantastic for Martin to come and play. If he keeps playing like that Glen may have a problem – but I’m sure he’s happy to play left-back.”

The praise was certainly fully justified and Kenny is probably not joking when he says first choice right back Glen Johnson will have trouble getting his place back in his favoured position.

Kelly’s form in his last three games won’t have come as much of a surprise to regular observers at Anfield, as after all, he has already shown in previous fleeting performances for the Reds that he has the character and the ability to play in the biggest games on the biggest stage. Rafa Benitez was not shy to give the player his full debut against Lyon in an important Champions League match last season, and the gamble paid off as he put in a man of the match display despite having to go off injured.

Why not give a try to putting Johnson ahead on the midfield left to see the results? That would smarten up the left wing for breakaways I think.

Hes excellent. Prefer him to Johnson everyday!

  • Mike says:

But we have to admit that Kelly needs improving in defending balls in the air because he gets beaten often. The second goal showed that although he got an elbow in the face.

  • David Tyrer says:

Totally agree, he was supberb yesterday. No reason why he shouldn’t hold on to his place for the games ahead. Although, I really don’t think Johnson should stay at left-back. Put him on the right wing Kenneth!

so kelly is good enough – WE KNEW THAT A YEAR AGO – HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR SUSO !

  • Mo says:

No doubt hes talented but we have soo many talented players in the academy. Suso like Stan has mentioned is an unbelievable player someone who even thugh is small has such a technical level of ability that he shud be able to play in the prem no problem!

Martin Kelly should be starting at right back from now on. His defending is much better than Johnson. Despite his height, Kelly is still quick and is equally competent going forward. We need a right back who can actually defend and for me, Kelly is the man, Johnson should be played further up field. Dalglish should not drop Kelly just because he has to accomadate Johnson.
