How has Mr Holloway come up with his valuation?

|

What a great weekend for Liverpool. A strong performance – all-round – a 3-0 win and a number of the sides around us stuttered. So it was good to be able to think about other things for a change and a couple of things have interested me this weekend: Charlie Adam’s valuation by current media darling Ian Holloway and Glen Johnson’s new position.

Starting with Adam’s price: having given it a bit of thought at the weekend, I can understand that Holloway doesn’t want to let his best player (and the most important cog in his side’s style of play) leave. However, his argument that Liverpool’s bid of £4.5 million is ‘disgraceful’ is a little bit out of order. If the club had offered 1 million, or perhaps even 2, he might have a point. But given that Blackpool paid £500,000 for Adam, barely 18 months ago from Rangers and stand to make a £4 million profit on the player makes you wonder what Holloway is playing at. I mean, does he genuinely believe that when a player as good as Pienaar moves to Tottenham (albeit, with months left on his contract this season) for a few million, that a player capped only 6 times by his country by the time he is 25 is worth almost twice as much?

Again, it brings me back to the argument that British (more so English players) are often being pimped by their clubs for at least twice their actual worth. Charlie Adam has played 175 games in his career so far, scoring 41 goals. For a midfielder, or a ‘playmaker’ to be more exact, you have to say that this is not a bad record; he averages about 1 in every 4 so far in his career.

Charlie Adam is a good player but this is his first season at the top level with Blackpool. He’s already 25 and it’s really only his first season playing in the Premier League. He may add some energy to our current midfield and he will be competing with the likes of Lucas and Poulsen at Liverpool but paying 6-7 million for this guy is a huge risk. Blackpool are unwilling to lose their talisman for 4 million, I can accept that but Ian Holloway must be joking if he thinks Adam is worth 10 million. I know that he is by far Blackpool’s player and as their captain, Ian is desperate for him to stay until at least the end of the summer but really, 4-5 million for this guy is more than reasonable. I have the utmost respect for Mr Holloway but what is he talking about when he described our 4 million bid as a ‘disgrace’?

    • Eric says:

As for Glen Johnson, I’m happy with him at left back until we bring in a quality left footed left back in the summer. Dropping Martin Kelly, who has been superb, just to accommodate Johnson at right back would be a bit unfair and a bit illogical. Kelly deserves to keep his place at right back and for the time being, I’m comfortable with Johnson at left back.

  • king kenny says:

IAN HOLLOWAY IS ACTING LIKE A TOOL OVER ADAM HE NEEDS A GOOD CRACK

  • steve says:

i find Glen Johnson at left back very good.he doesnt attack too much,he defends well and helps with his dribbles and passes for the attack of the team.kelly’s performances have been very good and he deserves to be in the starting line up.we definitely need carragher back as even at his age is miles better than skrtel.also one of the few problems i’ve found is that joe cole aint getting many chances and that’s bad.i prefer him from Maxi Rodriguez, who i cant get it why he is considered a starter. My liverpool line up:
    Reina
    Kelly Carragher Agger Johnson
    Lucas Meireles
    Gerrard
    Kuyt Torres J.Cole
aint a bad squad and i can wait till summer..but at summer an overhaul must be done and some quality players to be bought..sell the likes of poulsen, konchesky, aquilani,el zhar, degen, insua, jovanovic, maxi, kyrgiakos and buy 3 or 4 QUALITY players like suarez, lassana diarra, shawcross, hazard.

    • Larsen says:

How could you add Shawcross to your quality players list?

I would suggest we buy youngsters like Kyirgiskos Papadopolis and play him as a sweeper rather than Center back. Maxi has no pace or threatening skills or can make a brilliant forward run. If we are looking for cheaper option, I prefer Jarvis(Wolves) we are battling to get out of relegation zone. All we need in January is one striker! All other can be replaced with minimum effort and cost.

      • anteater says:

Talking about Greek youngsters how about Sortiris Ninis. He’s a winger and that’s what we need most (apart from another decent striker).

  • Chambers says:

I have little respect fot Holloway when he states that Adam can replace Alonso!! What bloody planet is he from with a remark like that? Adam is over halfway through his career and only now hits it with Blackpool. I think it is simply a knee-jerk reaction by LFC after the Blackpool game ( Adam played a stinker this last weekend it was reported). Even ferguson said of Holloway that he was always whingeing and crying poverty when he wants to buy but his greed leaps out when he wants to sell. Let him badger some other club for his ridiculous price.
Yet another manager who starts ordering LFC about in what they should pay for their players. Thios days have gone!!!

  • Voland says:

Why blame Holloway? He’s a sharp negotiator, as Alex Ferguson seems to suggest in recent remarks about the Blackpool boss.

At the same time, it does not mean we should overpay for Charlie Adam. I think £5 million or even £5.5 million might still be ok, but double digits is certainly a far-fetched scenario.

  • Cheyenne says:

Raul Meireles a Portuguese international with Champions League experience cost Liverpool 11M, how does Holloway expect that Adams could be worth anywhere near that, he claims that Adams is worth more to Blackpool if they he keeps them up but one player doesn’t make a team if they’re to stay up it’s down to 11 players not one.

The problem is that he likes to talk and seeing himself in print commenting on everything is probaly giivng him ideas above his station

    • Lee says:

If Holloway doesn’t want to sell the player then he can ask what he likes…you moron.

It’s a shame we haven’t done the same in the past.

P.S Holloway is a good guy

  • paul t says:

I think if Holloway wont let Charlie Adam Leave at the moment then liverpool should try and sign him on a pre contract, as i understand that Charlie Adam is only on contract until the end of the season with Blackpool anyhow, or more sensibly Mr Holloway should take his money now why he can still get something for his man, and he will only moan at the end of the season when he loses him with no money coming in for him.

    • anteater says:

Thought he has still 18 months on his contract so no pre-contract until this time next year.

  • stan howard says:

holloway is a hypocrite, the ball is in adams court if he really wants to go he will and holloway wont be able to price him out of it.
more importantly for blackpool all future deals will be almost impossible for them, whowwould want to buy or sell from him, it’s not worth the agrovation.

  • steve mcauley says:

spot on david, on both counts!

  • Lee says:

Holloway is a good guy and can give Adam what ever price tag he likes.

The fact is that we have higher priorities and shouldn’t even be wasting our time with him.

  • Rob U says:

How does anyone come up with a valuation?

Anelka went to Arsenal for 500K and was sold a year or so later for over 20 million! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is rated at 10 million, a player who has never played in the Premier League!

As for Charlie’s contract, he is a Blackpool player for 18 months or until someone comes up with the Clubs valuation for him, if that is Liverpool then all well and good, but would you seriously say he is worth 4 million? Ollie and Blackpool are correct to turn down these offers for possibly the best passer of a ball in the League.

  • Mike Arms says:

I don’t understand the fuss about Adam, has Comolli got him mixed up with Adam Johnson? With Gerrard and Meireless in the team and us looking at strikers and wingers then he would be on the bench anyway.
As for Johnson, not sure why Aurelio isn’t playing LB with Johnson at RM, maybe it’s because he can’t play 2-3 games a week and Kenny is trying to establish the back four into a unit. Although with Carra back in a few weeks maybe he will reshuffle the back four then.
As for this transfer window with Kenny stating Babel is staying then maybe we won’t be signing anybody at all instead waiting for the summer and better value for money purchases.

  • anteater says:

Blackpool are doing pretty well as a team right now and Adam seems to be an integral part of this team so I fully understand why Holloway doesn’t want him to go now. His team probably wouldn’t work as well without Adam and Blackpool’s chance of relegation would therefore rise. Means far less income next season. Holloway is indeed quite sensible in his stance of not wanting the player go now. The January transfer-window generally is more expensive than the summer window.

  • albey says:

You dont think kenny sees a paisley master stroke with adams do you . You know when the Great Ray Kennedy was switched to the left side of midfield from center forward I say this because his left foot is nearly as good as Ray’s and we no the damage Ray did with his and they both have about the same pace just an thought !

  • thecat says:

It’s supply and demand. Where were Liverpool 6, 12 or even 18 months ago when he was bought for half a mil from Rangers? You want him on the cheap yet you’re happy to sell want away Babbel for double the amount when he isn’t half the player. You want him, pay up or shut up!

  • albey says:

No the cat we have just sold babel for 5.9 million pounds at a loss of 6 million pound the reason because he did not make it in the premier league charlie adam has had a good season in the premier league but who is to say he will be able to do it next season when other teams sus him out and man mark him so 4 million is a fair sum for the lad and for blackpool thats your wage bill for the next two years paid so what the hell are you moaning about a the lad wants to come to liverpool all we have done is make what we as a club feel is a fair price bid we have gone above the other two teams who have bid for the lad so if your club dont except the bid then liverpool fc will look else were end of story and I would wish your club and manager all the best for the rest of the season by the way I am a big fan of Mr Holloway breath of freash air to the premier league .
