Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam can be the man to finally replace Xabi Alonso in Liverpool’s midfield. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:
“Charlie Adam is not in the same class as Xabi Alonso by any stretch of the imagination – but the fact that he has the ability to do a similar job for the team vindicates Liverpool’s pursuit of him. Ian Holloway is right in that respect. Liverpool won’t get another Alonso but what they will get is someone with a range of passing that they have been badly missing since the Spaniard left 18 months ago.”
Lawrenson however feels that Ian Holloway is wrong to say that Liverpool’s £4m bid was “derisory”:
“Where the Blackpool boss is in the wrong, however, is complaining about a bid of £4million. This is someone that Blackpool paid £500,000 for – he’s not going to get £10m for him and, let’s face it. he knows by now that this is how it works. Coming in low with a bid for a player isn’t ‘insulting’ or ’derisory’ – it’s just part of the negotiation. Coming out with all this ‘put up or shut up’ stuff just adds to the whole circus surrounding the saga. But the thing with these sagas is they usually end up with the player getting their way – and Adam handing in a transfer request points to an inevitable conclusion.”

One minute he says “Charlie Adam is not in the same class as Xabi Alonso by any stretch of the imagination”. The next he says Charlie Adam can do the same job as Xabi Alonso. Mark Lawrenson should really have a little think before shouting his mouth off and making himself look stupid. We don’t need Adam and we have better passers of the ball- Gerrard and Meireles. Aquilani is ten times better than Adam and only a retard like Woy will loan him out.
