It is that time of year again when one of the most anticipated events in the Engilsh footballing calendar is once again upon us; the Third Round of the FA Cup. Dreams will be made and shattered this coming weekend, so to get you in the mood, here are 5 cupsets that have rocked the footballing world, that will whet the appetites of Dover Athletic and Stevenage fans alike.

Hereford 2-1 Newcastle (1971/2)

Probably the most memorable of all FA Cup giantkillings, not least because of Ronnie Radford’s exocet missile of a goal to win it for the non-league outfit at Edgar Road against top-flight Newcastle, prompting a mass pitch invasion.

Sutton 2-1 Coventry (1988/89)

This was the last time a non-league side defeated a top flight team. Goals from Tony Rains and Matthew Hanlan wrote Sutton into FA Cup folklore, defeating the side that had won the trophy only 18 months earlier.

Wrexham 2-1 Arsenal (1991/92)

This tie pitched the current Division One title holders against a side who had finished bottom of the entire football league, only avoiding dropping into non-league football because there was no relegation that season due to another side having already resigned from the football league. So, an Arsenal win then? Well it seemed that way when Arsenal took the lead, but after goals from Mickey Thomas and Steve Watkin, north Wales went into delirium.

Bournemouth 2-0 Manchester United (1983/84)

Part one of Harry Redknapp’s love/hate relationship with the FA Cup starts here as he guided his struggling Third Division side to victory against Ron Atkinson’s FA Cup holders in one of the biggest shocks in recent FA Cup history.

Swansea 1-0 West Ham (1998/99)

Part two of Harry Redknapp’s love/hate relationship with the FA Cup ends in hate as he took his West Ham side along the M4 on a wintry midweek replay night at the Vetch Field. I listened to the game on the radio and quickly wished I hadn’t as West Ham were given the infamous honour of being the first Premiership side to lose to a Division Three team.
