TOP FIVE Liverpool Transfer Flops

|

The following  article was written by Matthew Wood for Clean Sheets All Around. Make sure to check out the latest news, blogs and podcasts at their site – ed.

5. Sean Dundee (£2m from Karlsruhe) – Signed by Roy Evans, the forward apparently had the potential to be as good as Michael Owen. He played five games, scoring no goals.

4. Bruno Cheyrou (£4.5m from Lille) – Let’s be honest, when someone dubs you ‘the next Zidane’ you haven’t really got a chance have you? Cheyrou never looked like having the required potential to make it at Liverpool although four goals in five games in the winter of 2003/04, including a winner against Chelsea, gave the Frenchman a bit of a cult status among supporters.

3. Paul Konchesky (£5m from Fulham) – Only six months into his spell as a Liverpool player, Konchesky has time to turn it round but from what we’ve seen so far that’s unlikely. In a way, Konchesky represented everything that was wrong with Roy Hodgson’s time as manager – settling for mediocrity. Described by many as the worst left-back Liverpool have ever had. (Don’t tell his mum, mind)

2. Robbie Keane (£20m from Tottenham Hotspur) – Debate still rages whether Robbie Keane was actually signed by Rafa Benitez or chief excutive Rick Parry. Whatever the outcome, Keane’s six month spell at Anfield was short and not very sweet. Experts predicted that the Irishman could establish a powerful link-up with Fernando Torres but Keane never really fitted into the Liverpool team and was swiftly sold back to Spurs for £16m, a decision that looks vindicated now.

1. El Hadji Diouf (£10.5m from Lens) – To put this deal into perspective, Liverpool turned down the chance to sign Nicholas Anelka in order to bring in the Senegalese striker. A memorable 2002 World Cup had Reds supporters excited about Gerard Houllier’s signing but Diouf never reached the levels he found in Japan and Korea. Despite two goals on his home debut against Southampton, Diouf was hopeless upfront and was converted to a ring-winger. He was sold to Bolton in 2005 following a loan spell.

I think this article is just a chance to have a another pop at Konchesky. As with Hodgson, 6 months is/was not long enough to judge anyone in football. He may or may not be good enough, but coninually giving him stick will not make him better.

I’d have Babel behind Diouf. So many chances and so little to show for it.

What about Alou Diarra? He may not have cost anything, but he was a Liverpool player for 5 years and never played a game. Something dodgy about that deal.

Diouf is a clown and a disgrace to football, enough said.

Robbie Keane, good player, no doubt about that but things just didn’t work out. Rafa preferred the Stevie-Torres partnership and as a result, Keane’s chances were limited and couldn’t form a lethal partnership with Torres.

Paul Konchesky, poor left back and poor siging by Hodgson. Mid-table player at best and is never going to make it at a top club like Liverpool.

Bruno Cheyrou wasn’t that bad and scored some memorable goals, I’d have Poulsen in the list instead of him.
