Fowler’s mocking of Torres really sums up how we all feel

|

I have tremendous respect for Robbie Fowler. Growing up he was my idol and when he left for Leeds in 2001, I was heartbroken and distraught at the fact that he had left the club. Fowler is still a Red through and through though and his comments on the departure of Fernando Torres sum up the feelings of a lot of Liverpool fans, including myself. In a radio promotion to help raise money for Queensland flood victims, Fowler was asked to come in to the studio wearing a “Shirt that Hurt” in the name of charity.

It was expected that he would wear a Manchester United shirt but the Perth Glory striker surprised everyone when he came in wearing a Liverpool shirt. Fowler explained his decision:

“There is nothing wrong with the front of the shirt but it’s just the name on the back. With what’s happened this week it’s a shirt that not only myself but many Liverpool fans would rather not wear just yet. He (Torres) did not leave the club in great hands or great shape but thankfully they managed to go out and buy a couple of decent players.”

The 35 year old had also wrote in his column for a Western Australian newspaper his thoughts on Torres’s departure:

“There’s something not quite right about the Spaniard’s last-minute transfer to Chelsea. As a Liverpool fan it was disappointing to see Torres leave because on his day he’s a world-class player and I want the best players at the club. But if I was a manager and a player said he didn’t want to be at the club I’d try to get the best deal I could. Only a couple of weeks ago Torres was talking about how much he loved the fans and the club. He won’t be getting a warm welcome next time he plays at Anfield.”

Fowler’s comments certainly demonstrate his deep understanding of Liverpool and its supporters. He comes across as a fan of the club who still cares very deeply about what goes on at Anfield despite being on the other side of the world in Perth. In his press conference today, Fernando Torres said he had decided to leave Liverpool “10-12 days before the end of the transfer window” and he felt he couldn’t wait for Liverpool to rebuild; he wanted trophies straight away.

Sadly, I know that Gerrard is aching to leave Liverpool too. A final big payday and a realistic chance of winning the title before he retires will see him at Man.City next season.

If Gerrard does leave I am sure he will do it in the right way instead of sulking, not really playing and handing in a transfer request just 72 hours before deadline. Oh and not say how much he wants to stay 2 weeks prior to leaving.

LOL, are you for real!!! Glen Johnson, Agger and Skirtel that is priceless!! Chelsea are still further along in their rebuilding with the likes of Rameries 23, Van arn holt 22, Kakuta 18, Sturridge 20 and Mceachran 17.

Add the experience of Torres 26, Essien 28, Luiz 23, Ivanovic 26, Alex 27 and Cech 28 add to that the investment in the summer that Abramovich is willing to make in Hamsik, Lukaku and Van de Weil make I think you can see why Torres has chosen to move on.

cech is 28 but man he cant even dive even the retiring vann dar sar is better and man reina is in his own league

  • ikcl says:

“Van arn holt 22, Kakuta 18, Sturridge 20 and Mceachran 17.” all unproven players, as are the speculative lukakau and van de weil..being a little presumptuous and exitable perhaps?
I wouldn’t like to put Liverpools future in the hands of Martin Skrtel though! But I do feel the medium term prospects of both sides are similar.

I cried for three days when Robbie left and was delighted when rafa brought him back. Like most Liverpool fans I was devasted to hear Torres handed in a transfer request and feel the same as Robbie, it cheered me up just seeing him in that shirt! Robbie’s a true legend and Torres has lost his status now. Robbie’s in a different class and know’s more about loyalty than the lieing Torres!

  • Blueblood says:

Yet another whinging old Liverpool player going on about what a bad boy Torres was to dare leave a team that’s not won the title for decades, that isn’t playing CL football and has no chance of qualifying this year either. How long is Torres supposed to wait to win anything at Liverpool? Tell me Robbie why is Torres vilified for leaving Liverpool when the same fans treat Suarez and Carroll as hero’s for doing the same thing to their clubs. Grow up and even better stay put in Oz.

are u dumb or what..but i guess u’ll have to be excused, being a chelsea fan…
no one’s upset that torres left, he can go where he likes, we dont need a player who is not interested in playing for us..if anything, our squad is stronger now…
but the way he left things is what is disappointing..u wud think he wud show a little more respect for the club that adored him and the club he supposedly “loved”…

      • Blueblood says:

If no ones upset why do we have to see so many Liverpool has been’s on the telly and in the newspaper crying about how unfair life is now Torres has left. Why should he respect a club that’s lied to him for 3 years about investing in quality players when the likes of Koncelsky, Babel, Ngog, r the best you’ve bought

  • Avadu says:

Cause I,ll be cryyyyyyyyyying over youuuuuuuu. lol

  • NM says:

Fowlers some need to slate anyone. He bled my club dry when we were broke and milked us for every cent he could get. We were still paying him years after he left. Fowlers nothing but a money grabber. He’s everything bad about the game. He’s just an has been who will go anywhere for the most money. He’ll say anything to stay popular with the Liverpool fans. Ask him why he left Anfield if he loves the club so much? Pot and kettle Robbie.

  • aazizis says:

for crying out loud…Torres is a spainard. He was not born in Liverpool like Fowler,Gerrard…He play for Liverpool because he wants to win trophies but Liverpool cannot delivers so it natural he goes to the team which have a good chance to win it.If Scunthorpe is in the priemier league and are at the top of the table he would probably go there same as other player too…Today loyalty come to nothing,Torres have the right to choose any club he want to play not only Liverpool.Mind you how the other club feel when their top players go away to other bigger clubs.Liverpool fans have to realised you are not a BIG club anymore….LEEDS Marching on …

  • RA says:

NM you are totally right, he squeezed every last penny out of a club that was on it’s knees and refused to let it drop. Fowler could not care less about football and the fans of any other team apart from Liverpool? I for one wish he had never left the place.
