Liverpool go into tomorrow’s match at Anfield against Wigan after four straight wins with no goals conceded. The Reds now lie six points behind Spurs in fifth position although the London club do have a game in hand. In stark contrast, the Latics have only won 1 match in their last eight games, leaving Roberto Martinez’s side in the relegation zone. That win for Wigan however, came against Blackburn Rovers last week in a 4-3 victory. Martinez’s side tend to concede as many as they score and they have scored at least one goal in the past six meetings with the Reds.

Martinez has stated he will continue with his attacking philosophy:

“Last weekend [when 43 goals were scored] was a great advert for the Premier League and it was typical of the nature of this season. From our point of view to score four goals at home is an achievement that has been coming this season from the amount of chances we’ve been creating. And also the quality of the goals were of the highest order, and we’ll plan to continue on the same lines.”

Wigan have a near full strength side to choose from and both James McCarthy and Charles N’Zogbia will be the main threats to Liverpool’s defence on Saturday afternoon.

In contrast, Liverpool do have a few injury worries. Steven Gerrard looks like winning his battle against a groin injury which kept him out of England’s friendly against Denmark on Wednesday. Right back Martin Kelly is also looking likely to be fit after shaking off an ankle injury which prevented him playing for the England Under 21s in mid week. Defender Martin Skrtel looks doubtful, as does Joe Cole whose knee could keep him sidelined again.

With Jamie Carragher once again looking to start and Skrtel out, there could be a place for Sotirios Kyrgiakos if King Kenny persists with a three man defence. A reversion to 4-4-2 however could see the first start for new £23million signing Luis Suarez after he was an unused substitute against Chelsea last week.

With Liverpool on a rich vein of form and not conceding, while Wigan look vulnerable at the back, it is hard to look past a convincing home win for the Reds, but with the Latics consistently scoring against opponents, as well as against Liverpool, in recent times, I will predict a 3-1 scoreline.
