Aldo: “It’s an absolute joke and common sense has to prevail”

|

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Andy Carroll should not play in the European U21 Championships in the summer. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo:

“I can’t believe England are seriously suggesting Andy Carroll should play in the European Under-21 Championships this June. It’s an absolute joke and common sense has to prevail. Under-21s boss Stuart Pearce thinks Carroll would benefit from playing in the tournament in Denmark but he’s talking nonsense. . . Of course Pearce wants the best side he can put together for the European Under-21 Championships. He wants to get the results he needs to put himself in the frame to become the next England boss after Fabio Capello. But this should be nothing to do with Pearce – he shouldn’t be sticking his nose in. Capello is the senior man and he should be dealing with all this. He should be speaking to the clubs. . . One of the arguments I’ve heard is that it would be great experience for players like Carroll and Jack Wilshere to play at a major tournament. Apparently it would prepare them for World Cups and European Championships. That’s rubbish. This isn’t a major tournament we’re talking about. Of course it would be nice to win the under-21 Euros but it gets you nothing in terms of world status. Rather than look to drag players down from the senior squad Pearce should be spending his time pinpointing those teenagers who really would benefit from the experience of playing in June. Forget Carroll and why not take the likes of Raheem Sterling, Conor Coady or Andre Wisdom from Liverpool’s under-18s?”

Aldridge also believes it was the right thing to send Dani Pacheco out on loan to Norwich City:

“A spell on loan at Norwich will do Dani Pacheco the world of good. I’m a great believer in lads going out and getting more experience. Tom Ince went to Notts County earlier this season and came back a better player. Before Ince went he didn’t seem to be going anywhere. The development in his game since then highlights the benefits of a loan spell. Pacheco needs games and he’s gone to a team who are going for promotion. It will be much better for him than playing reserve team football. Pacheco wants to play in that position just behind a striker but it’s tough because a lot of lads want that spot. He has great skills but he has to show he can take that final step to become a top player. The next 12 to 18 months are pivotal for him. I hope it works out for him at Liverpool because he’s a cracking lad with great talent.”

All fine and dandy until you look at the ‘top players’ that we’ve had blocking the progress of our youngsters…

At least the kids have a chance to blossom into better players. The likes of Maxi, Kuyt, Cole etc are already as good as they’re ever going to be. And that isn’t very good!

Maxi doesn’t play in the hole and Kuyt is better than you’re portraying. Cole on the other hand…
