Top Ten Premier League Cult Heros At Their Clubs

|

In a world where the best footballers are glamorised as gods in the media and worshiped by football fans all over the world, it’s important to remember the cult heroes of the game. Such players that don’t have the genius of Wayne Rooney or the magic of Lionel Messi but for one reason or another, they have a cult following.

It could be that player who displays real talent and/or commitment but never gets the recognition you feel he deserves, even amongst your own supporters. Like the players who do all the dirty work during the game but never make the headlines or the super sub that always seems to impress but never got a proper run of games for one reason or another.

Alternatively, it’s the player that the opposition love to hate, the pantomime villains or the players who can’t help but have a laugh during the game or add some comedy value. Or it could be that player who’s been terrible for your club for ages but just so happens to score that winner against in that local derby.

Whatever the reason for their cult hero status, they are the unsung heroes who may not be liked by the majority of football fans but have a place in hearts of a fair few. This top ten of Premier League cult heroes was tough with around 50 players written down to choose from, all of which had a good case to be entered. So in my final cult for the following top 10, I wanted to give it as much variety as possible whilst still acknowledging the size of their cult hero status.

Honorable mentions to those who didn’t make the final cut are : “Sir”‘ Les Ferdinand (QPR), Barry Horne (Everton), Georgi Kinkladze (Manchester City), Julian Dicks (West Ham), Jason McAteer (Liverpool, Bolton, Blackburn), Steve Stone (Nottingham Forest), Steve Ogrizovic (Coventry City), Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoigne, Robbie Savage, John Collins, Eric Cantona, Tony Yeboah and many many more!
