What will it take to catch Spurs or even City?

|

With Liverpool sitting well in sixth place on 45 points, it must be said that, considering where we were at the start of the season,  Kenny Dalglish has done a fantastic job with the team. It allows us now to be looking up rather than looking down in the table, and with eight matches remaining, I look at our rivals’ run ins for the fourth and fifth place positions. Below I assess the fixture list of our European place contenders:

Manchester City: 4th place (53 points, Reds eight behind)

Fixtures:

Sunderland (h)

Liverpool (a)

Blackburn (a)

West Ham (h)

Everton (a)

Tottenham (h)

Stoke (h)

Bolton (a)

Let’s assume that Liverpool beat Manchester City at Anfield in the couple of matches time, that still leaves Liverpool with five points to make up in seven matches. Although it is unlikely, and Liverpool would need a perfect run in, slip ups to Spurs at home as well as Bolton and Everton away are real possibilities. Considering they haven’t won away in the league since the turn of the year too, the match against Blackburn, after hopefully coming off from a loss against the Reds, could be another game where City could lose points. So there is a scenario where City could come back to Liverpool but it would be up to the Reds to beat Arsenal away, and both City and Spurs at home.

Tottenham: 5th place (49 points, Reds four behind)

Fixtures:

Wigan (a)

Stoke (h)

Arsenal (h)

West Brom (h)

Chelsea (a)

Blackpool (h)

Man City (a)

Liverpool (a)

Birmingham (h)

Tottenham’s game in hand over both City and the Reds is against Arsenal, and if they lose that match, which is possible considering the Gunners good away record this season, it leaves Liverpool with four points to make up between now and the end of the season. The Reds meet Spurs at Anfield in the penultimate weekend of the season, and with Tottenham still to play Manchester City and Chelsea away too, Liverpool’s fifth place ambitions don’t seem all too fanciful. Of course, a lot will depend on the Reds form too, and for the Reds to be able to catch Spurs, wins against both Spurs and City at home are crucial.

seems a tad optimistic and somewhat selective. Sprs home record is far better than Arsenalk’s away record. Never miond facts. Arsenal havew suffered defeat in both of the most recent league games between the clubs. Classic definition of the word assume. Makes an ASS out of U and ME!!!!!!!

liverpoll let roy go a tad to late. i hope we can do it. the west ham game hurt us abit otherwise it could have been close. but i wont give up, its the only thing left to cheer about, closer and closer to the end of the season. please sign elia and affelay i prayed for saurezzz long before he was even in talks. so mabye i can do it again

  • halim belaiboud says:

i also see that spurs play 7 games in next month ancluding real madrid we just have 4 games and if they pass madrid they will have 7 games in may so we are frech we only playe 8 game i hope

  • Kenny says:

Liverpool need to win the last 8 games and increase their goal difference substantially. City and Tottenham and even Arsenal will drop points on the run-in.

  • Mike says:

We already lost too many points and will loose some more in the upcoming games. We havent beaten Arsenal in a few years.

    To answer the title question;
A managerial appointment that isn’t based on misguided sentiment
10 more Stevie Gerrards for the first team
Some above average squad players for the bench
A striker that isn’t bought for double his value just because it is the last minute of a transfer window
    A time machine that has one of three settings;
    (1) 1960’s
    (2) 1970’s
    (3) 1980’s

    • kim says:

I’ll help with the time machine… 🙂 Looks like the rest is up to god, allah, buddha and John Henry. Happy with the King though. YNWA

have u seen our recent form in the league??
the appointment of dalglish has been the best thing to happen to lfc in the last two years…
he has proved himself after picking us up from 13th in the table to 6th..
it doesnt matter what the sentiments are behind his appointment as long as it works on the pitch…

We did the Arsenal a massive favour by beating Manure. Then they go and lose or draw with teams they should be steaming rolling , not to mention the 4-4 draw against Newcastle, of course that was before they had the stuffing knocked out them by Barcelona. Hopefully the local derby with Spurs will spur them on to beat them.
Spuds have a number of games piling up, hopefully they will go on and beat ‘the stupid one’s ‘ team and progress further which means more games, more fatigue and injuries.
City have ups & downs as usual, Balettoli makes them tick as does Tevez , without those two they are not as big a force & certainly defensively as demonstrated by Chelsea they can be opened up.

Ok, too many ifs & buts ,BUT OLDUN we ALL have to hope, isn’t that what life is all about? never say die & it is not over until it is mathematically impossible.
We should try & win all our games, add up the points and you never know. If we don’t then we don’t.
After all whether we finish 6th or 16th it makes no difference. Now we must simply focus on beating WBA, it won’t be easy with agent Woy at the helm who will be out trying to get his own back! I think as the punishment for wasting money buying Koncheski, Poulsen , Jove & other deadwood we should help sending him to a lower division.

Even if we do not make it we can send a very clear message to the rest for next season. By selling some of the players which are not of LFC pedigree/or do not wish to stay, we can raise around £50. If we can buy Sanchez, Adam,Coentaro,Jarvis (to have a mix),for around £80 mil, the new owners would only have to find an extra £30mil which I HOPE THEY HAVE!!!!
Then the team would be elevated to the next level to be challenging the likes of Barcelona.
I dream of that day once again as with KK at the helm we WILL return to our rightful summit.

    You Never Walk Alone

maybe we could catch spurs as most teams suffer in the prem after playing in europe mid week. I doubt we could cath city though

  • Debu says:

Need to get rid of the deadwood like poulsen, jova, konchesky, krygiakos, joe cole, maxi rodriguez, aquilani, degen n insua.. This wil minimum generate atleast 30 mil… M sure fsg would invest heavily this summer.. Anything between 45-60 million would be needed to rebuild our team to reach the levels of barca n real madrid.. With kenny at helm n comolli taking care of negotiations liverpool would b the team to beat next season!!
45-60 + 30 million from sales would make 75-90 million to be spent on 5-6 real quality players..
    Ynwa..

    • Matt says:

Maxi, Aquilani and Insua I would keep. By the way you are talking total and utter rubbish about the transfer fees. You are clearly a computer game player. Let’s just let club decide eh and not you – plonker.

  • Kenny says:

Liverpool have no excuses to avoid going the extra mile to win those remaining 8 games being played over 50 days. Spurs will beat Real and will get sidetracked by the semi-finals. Man City are not playing well and are totally reliant on Tevez and will likely focus on winning the FA Cup instead if they knock out United.

  • steve says:

it aint unbelievable to think of catching city or tottenham..we and man city have 8 games to play and tottenham have 9..we surely need to beat them both at anfield..which means that tottenham would be 1 point ahead of us(with the derby against arsenal a less fixture) and city 5 points ahead of us playing with the likes of arsenal and tottenham after.i risk saying that if we won 6 out of 8(2 of those 8 with tottenham and city surely) we could have a 4th position, considering tottenham and city’s current form..but still it aint easy to do that and finishing outside top 4 another year wont bring destruction to the club.the new owners seem intelligent guys, they put people in the club who know thousands of dozens things about football and the summer transfer window will be their chance to impress us and bring us where we belong, top of the table..future looks bright and i didnt get that sad that we got out of europa league..i’d say that i’d rather we got the 4th position next year while not playing in europe than win the europa league and not grab the 4th position..YNWA

  • glen says:

liverpool to finish 4th this season, next season atleast 2 major trophies shld be bagged. this will prove liverpools future is in gd hands. till then some1 can still try gettin his first goal.

  • philC says:

I guess for us fans “hope” is all we got. After the int breaks till the end of the season, every game involving us, city and spurs will be closely scrutinized by the media, fans and pundits. I’m glad & excited that Liverpool will be in mix for the European battle. A lot of our players will be back from injuries inc. Gerrard, which will be a big plus for us. I have faith in Kenny and Gerrard to get us back into euro elite comp. COME ON LIVERPOOL! YNWA

  • torres says:

one game at a time lads . 3pts every game and a bit of luck we could get 4th . unlikely but hey we were 3 down at ht in istanbul and you know what happened there . more likely we get 5th or 6th but next season we come out of the traps early , ps hope nando has a mare every game he plays , turncoat

  • anakjin says:

    ………cara……….agger…….
    johnson…….skertel……..soto..
    ……gerrard……….lucas…….
    …………..meireles………….
    ……….suarez….caroll………

    vs city

Johnson, skertel, soto, lucas & gerrard >> look at dzeko, tevez, adam, milner & Yaya

  • redrog says:

It’s certainly not impossible for us to nick 5th or even 4th but i think it’s an awful lot to ask. We’d need to realistically remain unbeaten and probably win 6 of our last 8 including wins against spurs and city. Can we do that? I hope so but i wouldn’t be putting a large bet on it.

  • dj says:

In a word, luck is what’s needed. Roy was left in charge to long, but I think Henry realises that now.
