A Slight Hint from Pepe about where his future lies?

|

The future of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been up in the air for a fair few months since the Reds campaign started to falter in the early days of Roy Hodgson’s reign. Despite signing a new contract last April, Pepe has consistently expressed a desire to play Champions League football; an ambition which looked further and further away as the Reds’ season went from bad to worse.

At this stage, there was no real concern that Pepe wanted to leave as, after all, every Liverpool player wanted to play in the Champions League, and there was nothing wrong in having such ambitions for a club such as LFC. The Reds were underperforming, and despite the frustrations that Reina was voicing, most supporters just felt he was airing what every Liverpool player felt; that the team were underachieving.

A couple of instances changed my perspective on whether Reina wanted to leave. Firstly the departure of Fernando Torres meant the Reds keeper had lost a good friend and team-mate, as well as world class player for the team. The uncertainty over Reina’s future was no more aptly demonstrated than in a second instance though. Without prompt from an interviewer on a Spanish Radio station, Reina mentioned the goalkeeping situations at both Arsenal and Manchester United, in conjunction with stating he would like to stay in England for the rest of his career. On top of a Guardian interview where he wouldn’t guarantee his unswerving loyalty to Liverpool, it looked as if growing speculation about his future was justified.

From my perspective, if he wanted to move on, I would have let him as there is no point keeping an unhappy player at the club. As King Kenny says, no one is bigger than the club and Reina would soon be replaced. On the other hand, if he were to depart, we would be losing a very talented goalkeeper; someone who showed his abilities again on Sunday against Arsenal with a point blank save from Robin van Persie.

Pepe’s off, he wants to win the CL and the league, and he won’t do it with Liverpool.

if he want to go…. make him around 20 m…. thats a buisness..

Why would he go to Arsenal? They aren’t going to win anything for a while. He’d never go to the mancs, and man city (Hart) and Chelsea (Cech), Real (Casillas), Barca (valdes) are sorted already. Poor guy doesn’t really have an option.

He seems a bit more intelligent than Torres and keepers tend to have longer careers too. He has another 8-10 years still and is likely to be a captain.

Isn’t the first half of this straight up not true? I remember them asking about Arsenal and United specifically.

Liverpool will be challenging for the title next season and be back in the CL the next. Reina is young for a keeper and very, very likely to stick around.
