Aldo: The FOUR Signings I would make this summer

|

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has highlighted the four signings he would be happy with in the summer. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, he said:

“If Liverpool really are going to challenge in the Premier League next season then we need to make three or four top signings this summer. Kenny Dalglish will know there’s a lot of work to be done. There’s a minimum of 10 players who need to be off-loaded this summer. There’s too much dead wood who aren’t good enough for the club. Moving them on is going to be crucial because it will boost Kenny’s kitty for signings. If we can get Jose Enrique, Gary Cahill, Ashley Young and Charlie Adam I’ll be happy. Left-back has been a problem position for us all season and Newcastle’s Enrique has impressed me. We also need another centre-half and Cahill at Bolton fits the bill. Everyone would love Young in their side and he would be a great buy. We all know Liverpool need some width and pace. Adam came close to joining us in January and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we went back in for him to strengthen the midfield.”

Aldo also praised the work of the youngsters coming into the side:

“I liked the fact Kenny had Andre Wisdom, a young centre-half with tremendous potential, warming up with the players before the game on Saturday. We also had Conor Coady on the bench. Our Academy lads have done brilliantly since they made the step up to the first team. They have ensured there’s positives to come out of the negative of having so many injuries. They have a huge part to play in Liverpool’s future but we still need to build the squad up with some quality additions this summer.”

This week it is LFC fan and tennis player Caroline Wozniacki!

i would change Adam for Aquliani, if he could be tempted to rejoin us,, i think he fits the bill better than Adam given the fact that Adam has not been as consistant of a player as he was before christmas.

    • Johan Rafety says:

I agree with u there mate why waste money on adam, when we have aqualani who has rediscovered his form! All he needs is a bit of persuading and honesltly i tihnk a title charge is on next season! Come on u reds!

Oh and btw our youth is awsome gonna a save us millions!!!
coady, sterling, flangan, robinson, wisdom, suso, morgan…. <— All destined for stardom!!!

  • Johan Rafety says:

Sorry aldo, gotta disagree with u there… Charlie adam would be a waste of dosh. I would go for a thrid striker just for that assurance we have strength in depth…. My choice Connor Wickham from ipswhich young and supports liverpool WOULD BE PERFECT. I would also go for Alexis sanchez but i know that isnt too realistic, especially with raheem sterling whos gonna be a 1st team player next year. Otherwise enrique cahill and young would be perfect!!!1

  • Bargeass says:

There you go aldo, talking out of your buttstream again.Adam is a waste of space, Cahill has as much skill as my pot plant, and young, well for the money we would end up paying for him we could have a more talented winger in Hazard or Sanchez. Sorry mate, most for the English players you have listed are rubbish, and would not help whatsoever.
Enrique is good, but if the price is 15m then go all out and but the Coentrao, for 25m we would be enlisting the best left back in the world, plus he loves Liverpool. 10 players leaving sounds drastic, and would be good if we had a kitty of 200m to play with, but there is no point in letting them go if they are replaced with the same kind if gobs***e. We should buy 2 marquee players, And maybee adding some depth in the mids and wings.

    • eddie says:

gary cahill is the best english centre back in the country along with dawson when fit. hazard has come out and said he wont come to us and wants to move to spain. i agree with coentrao for the money on offer for enrique we could buy him for close to that price. id go for chahill, coentrao, young, wickham and steven defour over adam.

      • Eric says:

Gary Cahill is overrated and the guy can’t defend. You would know this if you watched Bolton’s 5-0 defeat to Stoke. Steven Defour is injury prone and unproven and plays in the rubish Belgian league so what makes you think that the guy can cut it in England?

      • Bargeass says:

Have you ever watched Cahill play, i mean really watch him play. He is media hype, that is all. He has zero skill, and his defensive capabilities are not what you would call superb. Best English defender in the country?? well that’s not saying much for English defenders then is it? BTW, Hazard has not said anything about going to Spain, actually he has stated he would prefer to stay in France for another year on loan, if he gets sold. He has never stated he does not want to come to Liverpool, his words were and i quote ” I would like to join a club who plays beautiful football.” He has however said that he likes the way Arsenal play. So get your facts straight, and perhaps stop believing every piece if shite you read on the internets……

  • Paul says:

I think it needs slightly more than 4 players. We need two quality wingers, an addtional centre forward, Left back, centre back and midfield strengthening.
Defensively, we need a left back and in my opinion Enrique would be a good addition, but Warnock would be good back up. Then in Centre defence, we could do with Rolando or Cahill. Stevie G will be liable to get injuries now so CM would need to be strengthened, we could do this by adding Adam, we could get him cheaper with his contract running down but bring Aqualani back too. This would mean one addition at a relativly cheaper price, as we would have SG, Spearing, Adam, Lucas and Aqualani – I would add Turan too, in an awsome lookin Midfield. Add some wingers to this such as Sanchez, a real Marquee singing, Young, Marvareaux, Drenthe or Affelay. Finally add in a Striker to compliment both AC and LS to change things around a little as we could lack pace. My suggestion would be Wickham or Aguero.

Maybe fantasy football i know but with a few either or’s this is not beyond the realms of possibility. There is the Marquee signings we have craved, the defensive solidity, LB solution and wingers we have been looking for in years, lets not forget Kenny put Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo together, and brought Rushy back, for then record fees. Look at what he achieved withh them..

  • I prefer Young ,Vargas nCahill is a privilege

  • harry says:

I think we have three mercurial players in stevie, luis and pepe but we also have carroll who could prove to be the best of all. But our squad is still very thin, despite our brillinat youngsters. It is this reasoning i think that lies behind the players mentioned by Aldo. As in the next window they could all be available for around the ten million mark so they are affordable, better than we have already and used to the premiership so should settle in quickly. Also, the unkown element with each of these players is whether they will improve playing with a better quality. Young’s England performances, for example, hint at him being adaptable to the top level that can only bode well. I am tempted to think like many people that we should only buy marquee signings but as we saw under benitez investing all your money in only a few players can reduce squad depth and greatly damage the team if those signings are not successful (Keane, Aquilani and to an extent Johnson – not that he hasn’t been successful but 17m on a right back without a decent left back or reserve striker smacks of folly). Therefore I would hope that we did manage to sign these four players, but I will also keep my fingers crossed that we go after a player who is considered a top top attacking talent to give us something special. A Hazard or a Sanchez who could threaten in a different manner to the players we already have.

My final point regards Comolli, is it not his job to spot the Adams and Youngs in the Rangers reserve team or at Watford rather than when they have already established themselves?

  • Abdulahi kehinde says:

It is very gud 2 get young, erique, cahill and adam 2 our squad

  • Eric says:

Aldridge talks rubbish most of the time, he can hardly look beyond what the papers are making up. Enrique, Cahill, Adam and Young. Apart from Young, these guys are average Premier League players, none of them are the quality that is needed to move the club forward. Young would be a good addition but you’d be crazy to pay 25m for the guy. Cahill would cost at least 15m and the guy can barely defend, just look at the game against Stoke, he was rubbish. Adam is an average-at-best player who’s not good enough for Liverpool. The club simply needs to look abroad for better and non-overpriced players. Kjaer and Mertesacker are available or 10m so why pay 15m for rubbish Cahill. If you’re going to pay 15m for Enrique then why not get Taiwo or Wendt on the free, stump up more cash for Coentrao or get Baines for 10m.

  • Fitzy says:

I think some people on here been playing too much Fifa.

I think the players mentioned by Aldo are players that can make Liverpool a better team especially with a steady left back and something on the wing. Think Charlie Adam is bit of a gamble but a worth while gamble at the right price, same with Young, these two in particular will be in there last 12 months of contract so I can’t see why figures such as £25m for young and £12-15m for Adam are being quoted. Young will obviously bring us some width and pace plus his ability to cross the ball, Adam will offer bit more balance in midfield with him being left footed and the rest of our centre mids all being right footers. Think Adam will have to get fitter because ive seen him struggle in games after 50-60 mins and he isnt particularly a good tackler which is something of importance when sitting in front of the back four. People mentioning the likes of hazard and sanchez? Yer there good prospects, but they come with a hefty price tag, and I’m not keen on spending 40-50% of transfer money on a potential and no PL experience. They come and turn into a flop and then we send them back on loan to the bum league they came from and end up losing most of the money we spent on them. Think Aquilani is a good shout, I wouldn’t sell him unless we get the money they agreed, the lads doing well, if not think he’d be welcome back to anfield. We do need to get rid of the dead wood also, poulsen, degen, ngog, cole to name just a few.

    • nigel says:

had david luiz and hernandez the prem experience before their clubs bought them? If they have a winning mentality and desire to impress and improve, they will settle in just fine. Ashley young has done nothing for a long time. Adam is inconsistent and ponderous. So he can take a corner?! So what. Thats not worth his signature for lfc. We are lagging behind arsenal, chelsea, man city and spurs. We cant waste much more time on mediocre signings

  • King Kenny says:

Wings – Adam Johnson and Albrighton(if not get Ashley Young)
    Strike – Wickham,
    Centre Back – Cahill,
Left Back – Baines or Coentrao,

    Push Pacheco/Suso through(abscense of Gerrard)
Raheem Sterling (backup winger, Suso can also play on the wing if needed)

    • Paul says:

Rubbish mate – you are proposing spending millions for bench warmers and playing a centre back you have just paid nearly 20m for in midfield.
Stop playing fantasy football(badly) and get real.

  • King Kenny says:

Wings – Adam Johnson and Albrighton(if not get Ashley Young)
    Strike – Wickham,
Centre Back – Sakho (Cahill if we cant get sakho),
Left Back – Baines or Coentrao,

  • dear lfc fans in my view i don’t see ENRIQUE as a perfect left back that can do the job for us[lfc],i always mentioning that our managers should go outside ENGLAND there’s so many good defenders over there look at david luiz in chelsea, just look at shalk 04 who send inter m.out of champions league or revisit our lfc games with sporting braga then you’ll observed that there are a lot of good players they should forget about all this players they’ve going after in england and go to spain and germany also portugal.there are some many good players who can push us to champions league next season.

  • Jay Wright says:

The only reason to buy Adam would be if Meireles and Aquilani are being shipped out, otherwise it’s just duplicating qualities at the expense of spending on other more important areas. Fwiw, I do reckon that Adam is a better player than Meireles, but not Aquilani.

I’m still not convinced that Cahill is any better than Martin Kelly (the sooner that the guy starts playing at centreback for us, the better!)

I’ve gone off of Young over the last year or two, but would still be happy enough with him coming in. We need at least two wingers though, not just one – otherwise we’re S.O.L as soon as that player gets injured/loses form and left depending on Suarez to all of the work out wide again for us

    • Eric says:

In what way is Charlie Adam better than Raul Meireles? The fact that he has only 9 caps for Scotland at 25?

      • Graeme says:

Charlie Adam was nominated for Player of the Year. That certainly makes it a valid argument. Whether that makes is right or not is another matter.

        • Eric says:

So just because Charlie Adam was nominated for Player of the Year he must be better than Meireles then. I could go on and say that Meireles won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award. Adam is mid-table quality and can’t cut it at the top level (as shown in his recent match against Brazil). The only reason he is doing well for Blackpool is because all the other players are rubbish. What’s more, even Blackpool fans don’t rate him as highly as you think since they voted for David Vaughan for Player of the Season instead.

      • lee says:

totally agree adams is nowhere near as good as meireles and he’s playing out of position, leave him for manu and buy banega who his more in the alonso mould . he will help us open up teams like west brom where lucas and spearing got found out as just what they are hard workers.now steve is get on play him and banega has holding midfielders and set the team up
        ……………..reina…….
        johnson…carragher…sahko…..enrique
        ……..gerrard……….banega..
        …………….meireles ……
        ….suarez………………turan
        ……………carroll
        subs gk,kelly,lucas,maxi,kuyt,forlan

        • Jay Wright says:

The reason that I said that I think that Adam is a better player than Meireles is that he appears to be more creative in his passing and to have a more expansive passing range, as well as fitting into a pass and move game just as well.

Both are pretty much defensive nonfactors, whether it be due to a lack of physical capability, effort, defensive awareness or a combination of all three, so that’s a wash.

Meireles gets into shooting positions from open play more frequently than Adams does, but Adams gets his teammates into shooting positions more frequently (which is the job of a midfielder imo). Added to that, Adams is a also better set piece taker which leads me to conclude that Adams is the better player.

I know that Meireles has played out of position a lot this season (I still don’t know why though) but Adams is playing with a bunch of lower league players in the Premiership. Kinda evens it out doesn’t it?

      • Jay Wright says:

@Eric – In what way does the number of international caps prove a players quality or lack thereof?

Carragher has far less international caps than Skrtel and Kyrgiakos despite being considerably older than both – does that prove that he’s been a worse defender than them over the years? Matter of fact, Robbie Fowler, Ian Wright & Matt Le Tissier COMBINED probably didn’t even manage to rack up the number of international caps that Emile Heskey has – does that prove that Heskey a is a far superior player to them??

        • lee says:

what i am trying to point out is we have enuff attacking midfielders at the club so lets strengthen the areas we are weak ,adams is an attacking midfielder and we need a world class defensive or deep lying passing midfielder(e.g alonso style) . so lets spend the money we would be wasting on adams on a holding midfielder. as for adams playin his team mates into more scoring positions is due to the blackpool team give him the ball as much as possible

        • lee says:

jay you carnt compare carra with adams, has the scotland side he couldnt get in before was very average. we have to look that adams has had half a good season which doesnt make him world class. i know we might not be in europe next season but we should be lookin at world class players like suarez

        • Jay Wright says:

@ Lee, I’m not disagreeing with you about the necessity for Adams – the first thing that I said was that there’d be little to no point in buying Adams as we already have so many players capable of fulfilling his role.

I have to disagree with you about the creativity comment though – I can easily say that his teammates give him the ball because they are incapable of doing anything with it, and so the opposition are able to game plan more towards negating the impact of Adams whereas Meireles would be more of an afterthought for opposition coming up against Liverpool…

Irt the international caps, the point is that whether a player racks up the international caps or not does not illustrate a player’s quality – there are many other factors that come into play

  • a finnigan says:

rather have tony adams than charlie adam scott brown is a lot better than charlie lacks pace and a tackle good at set pieces so bring jan molby back a midfielder needs pace and tackling abilty jamie redknapp was like that could just pass and take freekicks and corners and forget Aquilani rather have suli muntari on loan at sunderland get him cheap suited to prem.

  • ynwa says:

Sorry Aldo, you have partly it wrong, Gary Cahill Young and Charlie Adam are just NOT Liverpool quality, Ashley Young is OK nothing secial neither.

  • mo daks says:

Hi I met ashley young on the M1 last week and when he stopped off at the service station he gave a hint that he will be signing for ManYoo next season.

  • ynwa says:

I AM JUST GLAD THAT ALDO DOES NOT MANAGE LIVERPOOL FC, cause we will be playing championship football in no time!!!

  • nigel says:

no no no no no no no no! Whats our ambitions at lfc? To get back into champions league and challenge for the prem! Enrique and adam arent going to get us there! Seriously! Id rather give jack robinson- suso- sterling- flanagan- pacheco- mavinga- coady- adam morgan the playing time they have earnt instead of WASTING £15m on enrique( how many spanish caps?) and £12m on adam (9 caps for scotland at 25?!). Not overly excited by young either cos we need width.. His game isnt getting down the wing, but he would improve attackin options. We need to spot the talent early. Look at hernandez at man utd! Great player. £6m? We need to spot the players. We need players like eden hazard, pjanic, marc albrighton, wickham, lukaku, alexis sanchez, moussa sissoko, matuidi, m’vila, mats hummels, subotic, perotti, defour, coentrao, aly cissoko. These are quality players. There arent many english players cos unfortunately they are a premium arent they. Possibly phil jones at blackburn. Adam and enrique dont cut it. Just more average squad players. Lfc cant buy mediocre players any more. Simple as that. Try to move on degen, el zhar, aurelio(injuries), insua, agger (injuries), koncheskey, ngog,
