Dalglish and Comolli ‘watch’ 19 year old in action

|

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and Director of Football Damien Comolli both watched Blackburn centre-back Phil Jones in the match between Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City on Monday night. The paper believes Dalglish is a massive fans of the 19 year old, and is prepared to go head to head with Manchester United for the player’s signature. Alex Ferguson enquired about Jones last summer, and sees him as a long term replacement for Rio Ferdinand. With Chelsea and Arsenal also interested though, the defender may cost as much as £15million.

This week it is LFC fan and tennis player Caroline Wozniacki!

I’d rather we just stuck Kelly in at the middle – the only difference between him, Cahill, Jones and the rest of the relatively unproven guys that we’re supposedly looking at is that those guys are playing at lesser clubs and so have been thrust into the first team a lot earlier than they would’ve been if their were better players in their first teams.

I’ve seen nothing to suggest that either is any better than Kelly, and at the prices being suggested it would be a collosal waste of money imo

I have to agree with Jay Wright. Just because we went to see this lad play, don’t mean we should buy him. Kelly is a better player than both of them so why waste £15m, with Wisdom coming through as well do we really need another young defender.

    @Jay and Andy

Must admit i know nothing about this fella but the FSG philosophy is only ever spend big on players the believe will properly improve the first 11. So clearly spending over £10 on this guy would mean just that…

Also is Kelly EVER going to play at centre back? Or is he being properly converted to RB? Does anyone know?

    • Jay Wright says:

Obviously none of us know for sure whether he will ever get his place at centreback; we can only hope.

As far as I can see, he can become a Corluka, Ivanovic or Micah Richards at right back (solid, powerful rightbacks that are very good in the air) or we could mould him to be a like our very own version of Ferdinand (i.e. a world class centreback that can play the ball, handle the physical modern striker and deal with quick players also); just as Man U & Arsenal are trying with Smalling & Djorou, or Barca are doing with Pique. I’d much rather we use him in the position where he has the potential to develop into a world class player…

His technical ability don’t make him a standout at rightback (he just uses his power rather than finesse like the guys I mentioned to get up and down), but combined with his physical ability(i.e. he’s big, strong and very quick for a centreback) that same level of technical ability would make him a standout player at centreback.

Phil Jones at +£10m is simply a risk that we don’t have to take…

Only seen the guy play the other day and the fact I can remember him must mean something!

Though I’m not sure we need him

Do we really need to go for a CB in the summer? Like most of you, I also believe that Kelly must play as a CB along with Carra or Agger (if he can remain fit or if he isn’t shipped out in the summer). We also have Ayala and Wilson who are quite highly rated. Ideally, I would like to see a future CB combination of Kelly and Wilson. Wilson, with his composure and Kelly, with his tenacity and aerial ability will form a really successful partnership in the future. A leftback is all we need for our defense to be honest and Enrique is the one I’d go for with Baines as second choice. I’d also like us to get rid of Johnson and go for Micah Richards though it is an unlikely scenario. Johnson is a decent bloke but he sadly isn’t a good enough defender and though his performances on the left have been encouraging, I’d rather go for Richards. With Flanagan and Robinson deputizing when needed in the full back positions, our defense for next season will pretty much be sorted.
    Probable defense for next season:
    Johnson Carragher Agger Enrique
My ideal defense for next season:
    Richards Kelly Agger Enrique

When I meant Kelly’s aerial ability I meant his ability to deal with aerial threats.
